Why dental practices choose ILS over BLS

The GDC lists medical emergencies as a highly recommended CPD topic for all registrants, and the Resuscitation Council UK's quality standards for primary dental care expect every member of the team to train together, at least annually, in a simulated emergency. For most practices, BLS meets the baseline. Practices providing conscious sedation are expected to train to a higher standard — ILS-level skills for the clinical team — which is why sedation practices make up a large share of our dental ILS bookings.

Built for the whole practice, not a course centre

Your dentists, nurses, hygienists and reception team train together in your own surgery, using your own emergency drugs kit and oxygen. Scenarios are chairside: a collapsed patient in the dental chair, anaphylaxis after local anaesthetic, a choking incident with an airway partly obstructed by dental materials. The 1:6 ratio means every delegate is assessed practising — nobody watches from the back.

• Recognising the deteriorating patient (ABCDE, NEWS2 awareness)
• CPR and safe defibrillation, adult focus, in the dental chair and on the floor
• Airway management with adjuncts
• Anaphylaxis recognition and management, including adrenaline administration

• Team roles when the practice is the resuscitation team

Compliance, honestly stated

The course follows Resuscitation Council UK guidelines and algorithms (RCUK-aligned). We issue a Kasorb certificate on completion — we are not an RCUK-accredited centre, and if your sedation society or indemnity provider specifically requires RCUK-branded certification, check before booking. Training records are suitable for CQC evidence and GDC enhanced CPD logs, with verifiable CPD documentation and learning outcomes provided.

Dental ILS FAQs

Does the whole team need ILS, or just the dentists?

The RCUK expects all patient-facing staff to train in resuscitation together; ILS for the clinical team with the wider practice joining the scenarios is the pattern most practices choose.

Is this suitable for sedation practices?

Yes — ILS-level training for the clinical team is the expected standard where conscious sedation is provided. Tell us your sedation modality when booking and scenarios are adjusted.

Does it count as GDC CPD?

Yes — medical emergencies is a GDC highly recommended topic. We provide the documentation for your enhanced CPD record.

How long does it take?

Six guided learning hours on-site, with around an hour of pre-course reading. Most practices run it on a closed afternoon or CPD day.
