Moving and positioning people safely is the highest-risk routine task in care — for the person being moved and the person doing the moving. This course trains your team on-site in safe technique, equipment use and risk assessment, matched to your setting and the people you support: £395 +VAT for up to twelve staff, meeting care regulator and manual handling standards, with a three-year certificate for every delegate.

This is training booked by employers for teams — care homes, supported living, domiciliary and healthcare providers — delivered in your own building on your own equipment.

What the course covers

Safe moving and positioning of people — not boxes: risk assessment before every move, biomechanics and strain prevention for the handler, dignity and communication with the person being moved, and hands-on practice with the equipment your setting actually uses, from slide sheets and handling belts to hoists and stand aids. Techniques are matched to your residents' or patients' needs, because a technique that works in a hospital bay may be wrong in a domiciliary bathroom.

How much does moving and handling training cost?

£395 +VAT flat for up to twelve staff at your setting. Open courses typically charge £60–£100 per person — and teach on generic equipment in a training room. Training on-site costs less for a full team and means every technique is practised on the hoists, beds and spaces your staff use every shift.

People handling is its own discipline

General manual handling covers loads; moving and positioning people adds consent, dignity, unpredictability and clinical risk. Our people-handling course assumes the object-handling theory as its foundation — if your team needs both, we combine them into one visit.

Who needs this training?

  • Care home staff assisting residents with transfers, repositioning and mobility — every shift, every day
  • Domiciliary and supported living teams working single-handed or in pairs in people's homes
  • Healthcare assistants and nurses in hospitals, hospices and rehabilitation settings
  • SEN schools and children's services supporting pupils with physical disabilities
  • New starters before first person-handling shift — induction-stage training is the regulator's expectation, not a nice-to-have

The legal position

The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 require employers to avoid hazardous manual handling where reasonably practicable, assess what can't be avoided, and reduce the risk — with training as a core control. In care settings, CQC expects staff who assist people with mobility to be demonstrably competent, with records to prove it: moving and handling failures appear regularly in inspection findings and injury claims. Every delegate's record includes techniques covered, equipment used, assessment outcome and renewal date, ready for inspection evidence and insurer audit.

Moving & positioning FAQs

How often should moving and handling training be refreshed?

Our certificate runs three years; most care providers refresh people-handling annually or two-yearly in line with regulator expectations and their insurers — we align to whichever cycle your policy sets.

Is moving and handling training a legal requirement?

Yes, where the risk exists. The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 require employers to train anyone whose work involves moving loads that could cause injury — and moving people is the highest-risk, most common form of it in care. CQC expects people-handling competence for any role that assists with mobility.

Do you train on our own equipment?

Yes — that's the point of on-site delivery. Hoists, slide sheets, profiling beds, stand aids: your staff practise on what they'll actually use, in the spaces they'll use it.

Do you cover Wales and the All Wales Passport?

Yes — we deliver UK-wide, Wales included, and can provide moving and handling training aligned to the All Wales Manual Handling Training Passport scheme. Tell us when you enquire and we'll deliver to the passport framework for your setting.
