Trusted by health, workplace and care teams across the UK

Compliance and certification

Staff receive a Kasorb certificate of completion for your training file. Your policy sets how often staff refresh, and we'll recommend a refresh interval when you enquire. It isn't a regulated qualification. Your team leaves trained and ready for the usual final step with any clinical skill: your own supervised competency sign-off against your policies. The training counts towards staff CPD.

How it works

  1. Enquire with your postcode and team size. We'll come back with a price within 48 hours. We recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date. If you need something sooner, just ask.
  2. Your trainer calls beforehand to confirm logistics and what's needed on the day.
  3. Morning: theory. Afternoon: practice on a simulation arm, with feedback from the trainer.
  4. Certificates are emailed the next day.
  5. Then your own supervised competency sign-off in practice, before staff cannulate on their own.

What the course covers

  • Anatomy and physiology of the veins, and choosing a site
  • Indications for cannulation, and consent
  • Aseptic technique and infection prevention
  • Preparing the person and the equipment
  • Inserting and securing a peripheral cannula
  • Caring for the cannula site, documentation and removal
  • Recognising complications such as phlebitis, infiltration and infection, and what to do
  • Practice on a simulation arm

Who needs this training

  • Registered nurses and nursing associates
  • Other clinical staff whose role includes cannulation under your policies

Typically in nursing homes, clinics, hospices and community services.

We recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy.

What the law says

In England, CQC's Regulation 12 (safe care and treatment) expects the people providing care and treatment to have the qualifications, competence, skills and experience to do so safely, and expects providers to prevent and control the spread of infection. Cannulation is an invasive procedure with a real infection risk, so a training record showing aseptic technique practised, followed by your own supervised competency sign-off, is the evidence inspectors look for. Care regulators in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland expect the same of the services they inspect.

How we assess learning

Staff practise on the simulation arm with feedback from the trainer, and understanding is tested through questions and discussion. After the course, your own supervised competency sign-off confirms each person in practice.

Your trainer

Your trainer has used these skills for real, as a clinical professional. They call beforehand to agree what's needed on the day, so the practical runs smoothly.

Logistics

  • Room: classroom seating with tables for the practical, and a clear wall or screen
  • Equipment: your trainer confirms what's needed for the practical when they call beforehand
  • Group size: up to 10 — so everyone has time on the simulation arm
  • Timing: 09:30–16:30; staff arrive 15 minutes early
  • Access: the trainer needs the room 45 minutes before the start
  • Anywhere in the UK, on-site
  • Literacy: we recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy

Cost explained

Clinical courses are priced by location: they're taught by specialist clinical trainers, and the price depends on where you are and how far your trainer needs to travel. Send us your postcode and team size and we'll confirm the price within 48 hours. It's one price for the group, up to 10 staff — not per person.

More than 10 staff? We'll quote for another session.

Frequently asked questions

Does this course sign staff off?

Your team leaves trained, with a certificate to show it. As with any clinical skill, the final step is your own supervised competency sign-off in practice.

Is practising on a simulation arm enough?

It's where the technique is learned safely, with feedback, before anyone goes near a real vein. Supervised practice with real people then comes through your own competency sign-off.

Does it pair with venepuncture?

Many services train staff in both. Tell us if you need venepuncture too and we'll talk through how to arrange them.

Does it cover giving IV medicines?

The course focuses on inserting a peripheral cannula and caring for it. If your team also needs training in IV medicines, tell us when you enquire.

How long is the certificate valid?

Your policy sets the refresh interval. Tell us what it is, or we'll recommend one when you enquire.

Can it be done online?

No. It's a hands-on skill practised on a simulation arm, so it's on-site only.

How quickly can you come?

We confirm within 48 hours, and we recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date. If you need something sooner, just ask.
