Clinical skills · On-site · Quoted for your team

Full day · Up to 10 staff · Practical on a simulation arm · Online refresher option

Venepuncture training teaches nurses, care practitioners and senior carers to take blood safely: the anatomy, choosing a site, aseptic technique, sampling, labelling and what to do if the person becomes unwell. Kasorb delivers it on-site in a full day, with each person practising on a prosthetic vascular arm using the same needles you use in practice. Up to 10 staff; quoted for your team.

  • Hands-on practice on a prosthetic vascular arm, with three observed practices each
  • Using the same needles and equipment you use in practice
  • Delivered on-site, up to 10 staff
  • Refresher training available live online
  • Certificates emailed the next day

It was an interactive and practical based training class which was well delivered by an experienced Trainer.

Trusted by health, workplace and care teams across the UK

Compliance and certification

Staff receive a Kasorb certificate of completion, valid for two years before a clinical update, for your training file. It's not a regulated qualification. Your team leaves trained and ready for the usual final step with any clinical skill: your own supervised competency sign-off against your policies. The training counts towards staff CPD.

A simpler way to arrange compliant Venepuncture training for your team.

How it works

  1. Enquire with your postcode and team size. We'll come back with a price within 48 hours. We recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date.
  2. Sort the equipment: three vacutainer needles, three holders and three sample bottles per person, plus a sharps box. Using the needles your staff use every day makes the training more realistic — or ask us to supply them, with the cost confirmed at booking. We'll remind you two weeks before.
  3. Your trainer calls beforehand to confirm logistics, and brings the prosthetic vascular arm and training blood.
  4. Morning: theory. Afternoon: practice — three observed practices each on the simulation arm.
  5. Certificates are emailed the next day.

What the course covers

  • Roles and responsibilities in venepuncture
  • Common blood tests, and why they're requested
  • Essential anatomy and physiology of the vascular system, and the veins of the arm
  • Assessing and selecting a suitable site, using visual and palpation techniques
  • Safe use of a single-patient tourniquet
  • Preparing the person and the equipment
  • Aseptic technique
  • Venepuncture and blood sampling on a prosthetic vascular arm
  • Potential complications, and what to do if someone becomes unwell
  • Accurate labelling and documentation
  • The person's experience: communication and patient safety

By the end, your staff will be able to:

  • demonstrate aseptic technique
  • demonstrate venous access, blood sampling, accurate labelling and correct documentation
  • show how to deal with someone who becomes unwell during the procedure

Who needs this training

  • Nurses
  • Care practitioners and nursing associates
  • Senior carers who take blood as part of their role

A refresher is advised after any gap in using the skill, followed by your own supervised competency check.

What the law says

In England, CQC's Regulation 12 (safe care and treatment) and Regulation 18 (staffing) expect staff carrying out clinical procedures to be trained and competent to do so. Venepuncture training on a simulation arm, followed by your own supervised competency sign-off, gives you the training record and the competency evidence inspectors look for.

How we assess learning

Three observed practices each on the prosthetic vascular arm, with feedback from the trainer. After the course, your own supervised competency assessment signs staff off in practice.

Your trainer

Your trainer is a clinical professional who has used these skills for real. They bring the prosthetic vascular arm and training blood, and run a trial with it beforehand so the practical runs smoothly.

Logistics

  • Room: classroom style
  • You provide: three vacutainer needles, three holders and three sample bottles per person, and a sharps box large enough for everything used. Using the needles your staff use in practice makes the training more realistic. Would rather we supplied them? Ask — we can, with the cost confirmed at booking
  • The trainer brings: a prosthetic vascular arm, training blood and the rest of the equipment
  • Group size: up to 10 — so there's time for everyone's three observed practices
  • Timing: 09:30–16:30; staff arrive 15 minutes early
  • Access: the trainer needs the room 45 minutes before the start
  • Anywhere in the UK, on-site — refresher training can also run live online
  • Online refresher: a quiet space and a device with camera and audio for each person joining — ideally one each, and no more than two people per device
  • More dates online: live online often has more dates available, so it's worth asking if you need training sooner
  • Literacy: we recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy

Cost explained

Clinical courses are priced by location: they're taught by specialist clinical trainers, and the price depends on where you are and how far your trainer needs to travel. Send us your postcode and team size and we'll confirm the price within 48 hours. It's one price for the group, up to 10 staff — not per person.

Frequently asked questions

Does this course sign staff off as competent?

Your team leaves fully trained, with a certificate to show it. As with any clinical skill, the final step is your own supervised competency assessment in practice.

Can our senior carers take blood?

That depends on your organisation's policies and how clinical tasks are delegated in your service. Many services do train senior carers in venepuncture, followed by a supervised competency sign-off before they take blood independently. If you're unsure, check your policy first — we're happy to talk it through.

Is practising on a simulation arm enough?

It's where the technique is learned safely: three observed practices each, with feedback, before anyone goes near a real vein. Supervised practice with real people then comes through your in-house competency check.

Why up to 10, not 12?

So there's time for every person's three observed practices on the simulation arm, with proper feedback.

Is venepuncture the same as phlebotomy?

In practice, yes — both mean taking blood from a vein. "Phlebotomy" is often used for the dedicated role; this course trains nurses, care practitioners and senior carers to do it as part of their wider clinical role.

What equipment do we need?

Three vacutainer needles, three holders and three sample bottles for each person, plus a sharps box. The trainer brings the simulation arm and training blood.

How long is the certificate valid?

Two years, then a clinical update. After any gap in using the skill, a refresher and a supervised competency check are advised.

Can it be done online?

The full course is on-site, because it's a hands-on skill practised on a simulation arm. Refresher training can be delivered live online, at the same length and group size as the full course (up to 10), though on-site is better.

How quickly can you come?

We confirm within 48 hours, and we recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date. If you need something sooner, just ask.
