How it works
- Book online and choose Buccal Midazolam on its own, or with Epilepsy Awareness on the same day. We'll confirm within 48 hours. We recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date.
- Epilepsy Awareness first. If your team isn't in date, book both: Epilepsy Awareness in the morning, Buccal Midazolam in the afternoon — always in that order, so staff have the foundations before the treatment.
- Your trainer calls beforehand to confirm logistics, and arrives 45 minutes early to set up.
- Three hours, including practical. Giving buccal midazolam takes seconds; getting the process right is what matters. So the session covers safe storage, when to give it, the steps, monitoring and aftercare, and staff practise a simulated administration with equipment your trainer brings.
- Certificates are emailed the next day.
What the course covers
- Introduction to buccal midazolam, and rectal diazepam where requested
- When it's indicated in epilepsy, routes of delivery and doses
- Safe handling, storage and administration
- When to administer, and possible adverse effects
- When to call 999
- Protocols, documentation and monitoring
- Individual care plans and your organisation's policy
- Aftercare responsibilities
- Practical demonstration, video, and a knowledge check
By the end, your team will:
- understand what buccal midazolam is, and when it's used
- know the routes of delivery and appropriate doses
- have practised a simulated administration
- know what to do when buccal midazolam is needed, and the aftercare responsibilities
Rectal diazepam: some care plans still specify it. Ask when you book and it's covered in the same session at no extra cost.
Who needs this training
Staff in adult or children's services who may need to give buccal midazolam to someone they support:
- Nurses and support workers in nursing homes
- Residential care home staff
- Domiciliary and supported-living carers
- Independent healthcare staff
- Home and team managers, and allied health professionals
- School nurses, and staff in schools and nurseries
Anyone who may give buccal midazolam needs Epilepsy Awareness first, and both courses are refreshed every two years.
What the law says
Buccal midazolam is a controlled drug given in an emergency, so the training and the paper trail both matter. Carers need epilepsy awareness plus buccal-specific training, kept up to date. In England, CQC's Regulation 12 (safe care and treatment) covers the safe management of medicines, and inspectors will ask how you know staff can give rescue medication correctly.
How we assess learning
A knowledge check at the end, alongside the simulated practice, so everyone leaves with their knowledge checked and a certificate to show it.
Your trainer
Your trainer is a clinical professional with experience in epilepsy care, and brings everything for the simulated administration practice.
Logistics
- Room: classroom-style seating for the group, with a table at the front for the trainer
- You provide: a projector screen or a blank wall
- The trainer brings: laptop, projector and all the equipment for simulated administration
- Group size: up to 12, on-site or live online
- Timing: morning 09:30–12:30 or afternoon 13:30–16:30; staff arrive 15 minutes early
- Access: the trainer needs the room 45 minutes before the start
- Anywhere in the UK, or live online. On-site is better: staff handle the device themselves. Live online works when you can't get everyone in the same room, but staff watch a demonstration rather than practising
- Online: a quiet space and a device with camera and audio for each person joining — ideally one each, and no more than two people per device
- More dates online: live online often has more dates available, so it's worth asking if you need training sooner
- Literacy: we recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy
Cost explained
£495+VAT for the day, up to 12 staff. It's a day rate: one trainer, one day, and the price is the same whether you book one half-day course or two. So most teams use the day for both — Epilepsy Awareness in the morning, Buccal Midazolam in the afternoon. The prerequisite is sorted and the practical training done in one visit.
If your team's Epilepsy Awareness is already in date, book Buccal Midazolam on its own at the same rate.
More than 12 to train? Book a second day at the same flat rate. Several sites? Book each site through our booking site at no extra cost, or we'll arrange them for a £100+VAT admin fee.
Frequently asked questions
Do staff need Epilepsy Awareness first?
Yes, within the last 12 months. It's why most teams book both on the same day — two half-day courses for one £495+VAT rate.
How long is the certificate valid?
Two years, for both Epilepsy Awareness and Buccal Midazolam.
Can you cover rectal diazepam?
Yes, in the same session at no extra cost. Mention it when you book.
Can it be done online?
Yes, live with a trainer, for up to 12 staff. On-site is better, because staff practise with the device themselves; online is there for when you can't get everyone in the same room, and staff watch a demonstration instead.
Is it accredited?
It's not a regulated qualification. It follows the most up-to-date national guidance on training carers to give buccal midazolam.
Is it for children's services?
Yes. Adult and children's services can book it, including schools and nurseries.
How quickly can you come?
We confirm bookings within 48 hours, and we recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date. If you need something sooner, just ask.
