Course specification
How it works
- Book online. One session, two sessions on the same day, or Epilepsy Awareness with Buccal Midazolam. We'll confirm within 48 hours. We recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date.
- Your trainer calls beforehand to confirm logistics. If you send your policies in advance, they'll read them so the session fits your organisation.
- Three hours, with a short break.
- Certificates are emailed the next day.
- Staff who give rescue medication can take Buccal Midazolam in the afternoon, so they're ready for both in one visit.
What the course covers
- What epilepsy is: definitions and how common it is
- How the history of epilepsy care shapes practice today
- Recognised causes of epilepsy
- Recognising seizure triggers
- Common anti-epileptic medication, and alternative treatments
- Recognising and defining the different types of seizure
- What to do in the event of a seizure
- Rescue medication: an overview only — giving buccal midazolam needs the separate Buccal Midazolam course
- Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP)
- Delivering individualised, person-centred care in epilepsy
By the end, your staff will:
- understand epilepsy: the diagnosis, management and treatment
- understand the psychological and social impact of epilepsy on individuals and their families
- be able to recognise seizures and take the right action, including first aid
- understand why care plans and risk assessments matter for quality of life and a safe environment
- know the importance of following each person's care plan
- recognise an emergency, and what to do about it
Who needs this training
Anyone supporting someone with epilepsy:
- Nurses and care practitioners
- Carers and senior carers
- Support workers in residential, domiciliary and supported-living services
- Staff in children's services, schools and nurseries, including school nurses
Anyone who may need to give buccal midazolam needs this course first — within the last 12 months — before the Buccal Midazolam course.
What the law says
In England, CQC's Regulation 12 (safe care and treatment) expects staff to have the knowledge to care for people safely, and Regulation 18 expects them to be suitably trained. For anyone supporting a person with epilepsy, that starts with recognising a seizure and knowing what to do. Refresh the training every two years.
How we assess learning
Learning is assessed throughout the session, through discussion and questions. There's no written test.
Your trainer
Your trainer is a clinical professional with experience in epilepsy care. If you send your policies in advance, they'll read them so the session reflects how your organisation works. If not, they follow current guidance and remind staff to check your own policies. Either way, staff can ask about the seizures and care plans of the people they actually support.
Logistics
- Room: seating for up to 12, ideally classroom style, with space at the front for the trainer
- The trainer brings: projector, laptop, flipchart and all general training equipment
- Group size: up to 12, on-site or live online
- Timing: morning 09:30–12:30 or afternoon 13:30–16:30; staff arrive 15 minutes early
- Access: the trainer needs the room 45 minutes before the start
- Anywhere in the UK, or live online
- Online: a quiet space and a device with camera and audio for each person joining — ideally one each, and no more than two people per device
- More dates online: live online often has more dates available, so it's worth asking if you need training sooner
- Literacy: we recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy
Cost explained
£495+VAT for the day. It's a day rate: one trainer, one day, the same price for one half-day session or two. So you can use the day in two ways:
- Two Epilepsy Awareness sessions — morning and afternoon, up to 24 staff, and the floor stays covered while each group trains
- Epilepsy Awareness plus Buccal Midazolam — for staff who may need to give rescue medication, since Epilepsy Awareness is the prerequisite
More than 24 to train? Book another day at the same flat rate. Several sites? Book each site through our booking site at no extra cost, or we'll arrange them for a £100+VAT admin fee.
Frequently asked questions
Do we need this before Buccal Midazolam training?
Yes. Staff need Epilepsy Awareness within the last 12 months before the Buccal Midazolam course, which is why most teams book both on the same day for one day rate.
How long is the certificate valid?
Two years.
Can it be done online?
Yes, live with a trainer, for up to 12 staff per session. This course is mostly knowledge-based, so it works well online. If you're pairing it with Buccal Midazolam, on-site is better for that half, so staff can practise with the device.
Will it reflect our policies?
Yes, if you send them in advance — your trainer reads them before the day. If not, they follow current guidance and remind staff to check your own policies.
Why not a free online course?
Free courses give everyone the same video. Here, a clinical trainer runs the session live — reading your policies first if you send them, and your staff can ask about the specific seizures and care plans of the people they support. It's practical, it's live, and it's built around your service.
Can we train more than 12?
Yes. Run two sessions on the same day, morning and afternoon, for the same £495+VAT — up to 24 staff.
Is it accredited?
It's not a regulated qualification. It follows the most up-to-date national guidance.
Is it for children's services and schools?
Yes. Adult and children's services, schools and nurseries can all book it.
How quickly can you come?
We confirm bookings within 48 hours, and we recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date. If you need something sooner, just ask.
