What the law says
In England, CQC expects people to be treated with dignity and respect, with their privacy protected (Regulation 10), and staff to have the training they need for their role (Regulation 18). Regulators in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland expect the same. Poor continence care can quickly lead to skin damage, infection and distress, so it matters to the people you support, their families and inspectors.
Training gives your staff a shared, dignified approach and gives you evidence for your training file.
How we assess learning
Learning is assessed through case studies, discussion and questions.
Your trainer
Your trainer has used these skills for real. They keep the focus on the person — their dignity, privacy and choices — as well as on products and routines.
Logistics
- Room: horseshoe or classroom seating — what matters is clear floor space, with a screen or blank wall for slides
- The trainer brings: all general training equipment and the course materials
- Helpful to have: a few of the continence products your staff use every day
- Group size: up to 12, on-site or live online
- Timing: agreed with you when you enquire; staff arrive 15 minutes early
- Access: the trainer needs the room 45 minutes before the start
- Anywhere in the UK, or live online
- Live online: a quiet space and a device with camera and audio for each person joining — ideally one device each, and never more than two people per device
- More dates online: live online often has more dates available, so it's worth asking if you need training sooner or have people across several locations
- Literacy: we recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy

Frequently asked questions
Does it cover catheters?
It covers catheter awareness: what staff should look out for and when to report concerns. For practical catheter care skills, see Catheter Care.
Does it cover bowel care and suppositories?
It covers constipation, using the Bristol Stool Chart and when to escalate. Giving suppositories or enemas is covered in Bowel Management & Suppositories.
Do we need to provide continence products?
You don't have to, but it helps. If you'd like staff to look at the products they use every day, have a few to hand on the day.
Can it be done online?
Yes, live with a trainer for up to 12 staff — not a recorded module. On-site makes it easier to look at the products your staff actually use.
Does it cover skin damage?
Yes: protecting skin and preventing moisture-associated skin damage. For pressure ulcer prevention in depth, see Wound Care & Pressure Ulcer Prevention.
Is it suitable for home care teams?
Yes. It suits care home, supported living and home care staff, and the trainer adapts the examples to your setting — including supporting people in their own homes.
How quickly can you come?
We confirm within 48 hours, and we recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date. If you need something sooner, just ask.
