Compliance and certification
Staff receive a Kasorb certificate of completion, valid for three years, with an annual refresher recommended. It's practical awareness training that supports your own ligature risk assessment and your organisation's policies on supporting people at risk — it isn't a risk assessment of your environment, and it's not a regulated qualification.

Course specification
How it works
- Book online. One session, or two on the same day, on-site or live online. We'll confirm within 48 hours. We recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date — live online offers the best availability of dates.
- Your trainer calls beforehand to confirm logistics, and to understand your setting and the people you support.
- Three hours, with a short break, delivered with care — trainers recognise that some staff may have direct experience of an incident. On-site, staff practise with your own ligature cutters — the ones they'd actually reach for.
- Certificates are emailed the next day.
What the course covers
- Types of ligature and ligature points
- Recognising the signs and symptoms of ligature injury
- Ligature risks in the environment: what to look for, with examples
- Safe response and removal
- Selecting and using ligature cutters
- First aid actions after an incident
By the end, your staff will have:
- an understanding of how to identify ligatures and ligature points, and how to manage and use ligature cutters
- an understanding of what to look for in their environment, and how that feeds into your ligature risk assessment
- an understanding of the right first aid actions to take after an incident
Who needs this training
Anyone supporting people who may be at risk of a ligature incident:
- Mental health inpatient and community teams
- Learning disability and autism services
- Supported living and residential care
- Children's residential homes and CAMHS settings
We recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy.
What the law says
In England, CQC's Regulation 12 (safe care and treatment) expects providers to assess and reduce environmental risks, and CQC's inspection guidance on ligature points looks at how services identify and manage them. Staff who understand ligature risk — and can respond quickly and safely if it's needed — are central to that. This course supports your own ligature risk assessment and gives you training evidence for your file.
How we assess learning
Learning is checked throughout the session, through questions and discussion — and, on-site, observed practice with your ligature cutters.
Your trainer
Our ligature trainers come from a range of backgrounds, and all are trained and qualified to teach ligature awareness and response.
Your trainer calls before the day to understand your service, so the examples reflect the people you support. The subject is handled with care — trainers are aware that some staff may have been involved in an incident.
Logistics
- Room: classroom or boardroom style

- The trainer brings: projector, laptop and flipcharts

- More dates online: live online often has more dates available, so it's worth asking if you need training sooner

- Timing: morning 09:30–12:30 or afternoon 13:30–16:30; staff arrive 15 minutes early

Cost explained
£495+VAT for the day. It's a day rate: one trainer, one day, the same price for one half-day session or two. Run two sessions, morning and afternoon, and train up to 24 staff while the rest of the team covers the floor.
More than 24 to train? Book another day at the same flat rate. Several sites? Book each site through our booking site at no extra cost, or we'll arrange them for a £100+VAT admin fee.
Frequently asked questions
On-site or online — which should we choose?
On-site if you can. Staff practise with ligature cutters, which isn't possible online. Live online works for dispersed teams, or where the priority is risk awareness and assessment.
Do staff practise with ligature cutters?
Yes, on-site only, using your own cutters — the ones in your emergency kit — so staff are familiar with exactly what they'd reach for. Handling them in training means staff aren't doing it for the first time in an emergency.
Will the trainer assess our environment?
No — it isn't a risk assessment. Your trainer talks staff through what to look for, with examples from settings like yours, so they can spot risks day to day and feed into your own ligature risk assessment.
Some of our staff have been involved in an incident. Is this suitable?
Yes. Trainers deliver it with care and are aware that some staff may have direct experience. Let us know when you book, and your trainer will take it into account.
Does it cover CPR?
No. Responding to an incident can involve CPR and the recovery position, and the course explains when — but it doesn't train those skills. For CPR and defibrillation, staff need our Basic Life Support or Emergency First Aid at Work course.
How long does the certificate last?
Three years, with an annual refresher recommended — most services working with people at risk refresh every year.
Can we train more than 12?
Yes. Run two sessions on the same day for the same £495+VAT — up to 24 staff.
How quickly can you come?
We confirm bookings within 48 hours, and we recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date. If you need something sooner, just ask.
