What the law says
NICE's guideline on self-harm (NG225) covers assessment, management and preventing recurrence. It applies across health and social care, education and the criminal justice system, and includes recommendations on training and supervision for staff who work with people who self-harm. Attitudes matter: people who feel judged are less likely to ask for help.
In England, CQC's Regulation 12 (safe care and treatment) expects providers to assess and manage risks to people's safety, and Regulation 18 expects staff to have the training they need. This course gives you training evidence for your file.
How we assess learning
Your trainer reviews learning throughout the day through questions, discussion and case studies.
Your trainer
Your trainer has used these skills for real, and handles the subject with care — focusing on understanding and support, and aware that some staff may have their own experience of self-harm.
Logistics
- Room: horseshoe or classroom seating — what matters is clear floor space — with a projector screen or blank wall
- The trainer brings: projector, laptop, flipchart and all general training equipment
- Group size: up to 12, on-site or live online
- Timing: 09:30–16:30; staff arrive 15 minutes early
- Access: the trainer needs the room 45 minutes before the start
- Anywhere in the UK, or live online
- Live online: a quiet space and a device with camera and audio for each person joining — ideally one device each, and never more than two people per device
- More dates online: live online often has more dates available, so it's worth asking if you need training sooner or have people across several locations
- Literacy: we recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy
