Compliance and certification

Staff receive a Kasorb certificate of completion. There's no fixed expiry: we'll recommend a refresh interval to suit your service, and your own policy sets it. Staff leave fully trained and certified, ready for your usual in-house competency sign-off. It isn't a regulated qualification.

What the course covers

  • Causes and types of spinal injury, and the anatomy involved
  • Complications of spinal injury
  • Positioning
  • Bowel care, and neurogenic bowel and bladder
  • Autonomic dysreflexia: what it is, the signs and symptoms, and treatment including emergency actions

Who needs this training

Health and care staff caring for people with spinal injuries:

  • Complex care and continuing healthcare teams
  • Supported living and home care staff
  • Residential and nursing home teams
  • Senior carers and team leaders setting up a new spinal injury care package

We recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy.

What the law says

No law sets out spinal injury training by name. But in England, CQC's Regulation 12 (safe care and treatment) expects providers to assess and reduce the risks to people's health and safety, and Regulation 18 expects staff to have the training they need to support the people in their care. Care regulators in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland set similar expectations.

For someone with a spinal injury, those risks include autonomic dysreflexia, bowel and bladder complications and pressure damage — so staff who understand them are central to safe care.

How we assess learning

Your trainer tests understanding throughout the day through questions and discussion.

Your trainer

Your trainer has used these skills for real, and teaches spinal injury care in terms of the people your staff support. They call before the day to understand your service, so the focus fits the person's needs.

Logistics

  • Room: seating for up to 10, horseshoe or classroom seating — what matters is clear floor space, with a projector screen or blank wall
  • The trainer brings: projector, laptop, handouts and relevant spinal equipment
  • Group size: up to 10
  • Timing: 09:30–16:30; staff arrive 15 minutes early
  • Access: the trainer needs the room 45 minutes before the start
  • Anywhere in the UK, at your workplace
  • Literacy: we recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy

Frequently asked questions

Why does autonomic dysreflexia matter?

It's a medical emergency that can develop quickly in people with higher-level spinal injuries. Staff who recognise the signs and know the emergency actions can prevent serious harm, so it's a central part of the day.

Does it cover bowel care?

Yes — neurogenic bowel and bladder care. Digital rectal stimulation is a separate course; ask us about it when you book.

Does it cover moving and positioning?

It covers positioning people with a spinal injury. For hoists, slings and safer handling in general, staff also need Moving & Handling People.

We support one person with a spinal injury. Is this suitable?

Yes. It suits complex care, supported living and home care teams supporting someone with a spinal injury. Your trainer calls beforehand to understand your service and the person's needs.

How long does the certificate last?

There's no fixed expiry. We'll recommend a refresh interval to suit your service, and your own policy sets it.

Can we train more than 10?

Yes. Book another day at the same flat rate.

How quickly can you come?

We confirm bookings within 48 hours, and we recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date. If you need something sooner, just ask.
