What the law says
NICE guidance on reducing the risk of venous thromboembolism sets out how services should assess and reduce the risk of blood clots, particularly for people in hospital. In England, CQC expects care to be safe (Regulation 12) and staff to have the training they need for their role (Regulation 18); regulators in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland expect the same.
This is awareness training: it doesn't cover VTE risk assessment, prescribing or fitting stockings.
How we assess learning
Learning is assessed through case studies, discussion and questions.
Your trainer
Your trainer has used these skills for real. They keep it practical: the signs staff might see on shift, and exactly what to do next.
Logistics
- Room: horseshoe or classroom seating — what matters is clear floor space, with a screen or blank wall for slides
- The trainer brings: all general training equipment and the course materials
- Group size: up to 12, on-site or live online
- Timing: agreed with you when you enquire; staff arrive 15 minutes early
- Access: the trainer needs the room 45 minutes before the start
- Anywhere in the UK, or live online
- Live online: a quiet space and a device with camera and audio for each person joining — ideally one device each, and never more than two people per device
- More dates online: live online often has more dates available, so it's worth asking if you need training sooner or have people across several locations
- Literacy: we recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy

Frequently asked questions
Does it cover fitting anti-embolism stockings?
No. It covers stockings at awareness level: what they're for, what to look out for and when to report concerns. Measuring and fitting follow your policy and the manufacturer's instructions.
Is this for nurses?
It's awareness level, for healthcare assistants, care and support staff. It doesn't cover VTE risk assessment, prescribing or managing anticoagulation.
What should staff do if they suspect a pulmonary embolism?
Treat it as an emergency: sudden breathlessness, chest pain or coughing up blood mean calling 999. The course covers the signs of a clot and when to escalate.
Does it cover anticoagulant medicines?
At awareness level: what they're for, and side effects staff should report, such as unusual bleeding or bruising. It doesn't cover giving or managing them.
How is this different from Sepsis Awareness?
Both help staff spot a serious condition early. This course is about blood clots; Sepsis Awareness is about recognising and escalating sepsis.
Can it be done online?
Yes, live with a trainer for up to 12 staff — not a recorded module.
How quickly can you come?
We confirm within 48 hours, and we recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date. If you need something sooner, just ask.
