Compliance and certification

Staff receive a Kasorb certificate of completion. We recommend refreshing every three years, or sooner if your own policy requires. It's awareness training for staff who may need to recognise a stroke or support someone living with its effects. It isn't a regulated qualification.

How it works

  1. Book online. One session, or two in one day, on-site or live online. We'll confirm within 48 hours. We recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date — live online offers the best availability of dates.
  2. Your trainer calls beforehand to confirm logistics. If you support people who've had a stroke, tell them, and they'll focus the session on those needs.
  3. Three hours, with a short break.
  4. Certificates are emailed the next day.

What the course covers

  • What a stroke is, and transient ischaemic attack (TIA)
  • Recognising a stroke: FAST and BE FAST
  • Why every minute matters
  • Common effects of stroke
  • Communication difficulties, including aphasia
  • Swallowing, positioning and mobility
  • Emotional effects
  • Reducing the risk of another stroke

Who needs this training

Staff who may need to recognise a stroke, or who support people living with its effects:

  • Care and support workers in residential, nursing and home care
  • Senior carers, team leaders and nurses
  • Rehabilitation, reablement and supported living teams
  • Anyone supporting older people or people at higher risk of stroke

We recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy.

What the law says

A stroke is a medical emergency: the sooner someone gets to hospital, the more treatment can do. The National Clinical Guideline for Stroke for the UK and Ireland sets out best practice for stroke care and rehabilitation, and care staff play a big part in both spotting a stroke and supporting recovery.

In England, CQC's Regulation 9 (person-centred care) expects care to meet people's needs, and Regulation 18 expects staff to have the training they need for their role. Care regulators in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own standards, which also expect staff to be trained to meet people's needs.

How we assess learning

Your trainer tests understanding throughout the session through case studies and questions.

Your trainer

Your trainer has used these skills for real, and teaches stroke awareness in terms of your setting — so staff know what to do in the first minutes, and how to support someone in the months after.

Logistics

  • Room: horseshoe or classroom seating for up to 12 — what matters is clear floor space — with a projector screen or blank wall
  • The trainer brings: projector, laptop, flipchart and all general training equipment
  • Group size: up to 12 per session, on-site or live online
  • Timing: morning 09:30–12:30 or afternoon 13:30–16:30; staff arrive 15 minutes early
  • Access: the trainer needs the room 45 minutes before the start
  • Anywhere in the UK, or live online
  • Live online: a quiet space and a device with camera and audio for each person joining — ideally one device each, and never more than two people per device
  • More dates online: live online often has more dates available, so it's worth asking if you need training sooner or have people across several locations
  • Literacy: we recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy

Cost explained

£495+VAT for the day. It's a day rate: one trainer, one day, the same price for one half-day session or two. Run two sessions, morning and afternoon, and train up to 24 staff while the rest of the team covers the floor.

More than 24 to train? Book another day at the same flat rate. Several sites? Book each site through our booking site at no extra cost, or we'll arrange them for a £100+VAT admin fee.

Frequently asked questions

What is FAST?

FAST is a quick test for the most common signs of a stroke: Face (has it dropped?), Arms (can they raise both?), Speech (is it slurred?) and Time to call 999. Some services use BE FAST, which adds Balance and Eyes. The course covers both.

Does it cover swallowing difficulties?

At awareness level — why swallowing can be affected after a stroke, and the signs to look out for. Our Dysphagia course goes into safe swallowing in depth.

Can it be done online?

Yes, live with a trainer, for up to 12 staff per session — not a recorded module. It's knowledge- and discussion-based, so it works well online.

Why not e-learning?

E-learning can show staff the FAST test. Here, a trainer talks your team through real situations — what a stroke can look like, what to do, and how to support someone afterwards — and answers questions about the people you support. For a full group of 12 it works out at around £41 a head.

How long does the certificate last?

We recommend refreshing every three years, or sooner if your own policy requires.

Can we train more than 12?

Yes. Run two sessions in one day for the same £495+VAT — up to 24 staff. For more than 24, book another day at the same flat rate.

How quickly can you come?

We confirm bookings within 48 hours, and we recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date. If you need something sooner, just ask.
