It was an interactive and practical based training class which was well delivered by an experienced Trainer.

Compliance and certification

Staff receive a Kasorb certificate of completion for your training file. It doesn't expire, but we recommend an annual refresher. It's not a regulated qualification. Your team leaves fully trained and ready for the usual final step with any clinical skill: your own supervised competency sign-off, recorded in each person's competency log or personal development plan.

How it works

  1. Enquire with your postcode and team size — and if someone is being discharged to you, the discharge date. We'll come back with a price within 48 hours. We recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date, and we'll do our best to work to a discharge date.
  2. Tell us about the people you support: the tube types and care plans your team works with — across a ward or service, or for one individual if you give us specific, anonymised details at booking. Your trainer tailors the session to them.
  3. Your trainer calls beforehand to confirm logistics, and brings a tracheostomy training model for the practical.
  4. Three hours: the theory, then hands-on practice on the model.
  5. Certificates are emailed the next day.
  6. Then your own supervised competency check, as with any clinical skill.

What the course covers

  • The anatomy and physiology of the trachea
  • Types of tracheostomy tube
  • Communicating effectively to reduce distress
  • Tracheostomy risk assessment
  • Tracheostomy care: changing dressings, suctioning, and removing the tube
  • Humidification
  • Managing tracheostomy emergencies, such as a blocked or displaced tube
  • Tracheostomy resuscitation

By the end, your staff will:

  • have a clear understanding of tracheostomy care and procedures
  • be able to identify the possible risks
  • understand the anatomy and physiology of the trachea

Who needs this training

  • Nurses
  • Healthcare assistants
  • Carers supporting people with a tracheostomy — on specialist wards and units, and in residential, nursing, supported living or home care

A refresher is advised after any gap in using the skills, followed by your own supervised competency check. We recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy.

What the law says

In England, CQC's Regulation 12 (safe care and treatment) and Regulation 18 (staffing) expect staff carrying out clinical care to be trained and competent to do so. Tracheostomy care carries real risk if it goes wrong, so a documented training record, followed by your own competency sign-off, is the evidence inspectors expect to see.

How we assess learning

On-site: observed practice on a tracheostomy training model, with feedback from the trainer. Live online sessions are refreshers and cover the theory, so first-time learners should train on-site.

Your trainer

Your trainer is a clinical professional who has used these skills for real. They tailor the session to the people you support, and bring a tracheostomy training model for the practical. Clinical training like this counts towards staff CPD.

Logistics

  • Room: classroom style, with space for the practical
  • You provide: a projector screen or blank wall
  • The trainer brings: laptop, projector and a tracheostomy training model
  • Group size: up to 10
  • Timing: morning 09:30–12:30 or afternoon 13:30–16:30; staff arrive 15 minutes early
  • Access: the trainer needs the room 45 minutes before the start
  • Live online: a quiet space and a device with camera and audio for each person joining — ideally one device each, and never more than two people per device
  • More dates online: live online often has more dates available, so it's worth asking if you need training sooner
  • Anywhere in the UK, or live online. On-site is better: staff practise on the training model. Live online suits theory refreshers, or teams who can't be in one room

Cost explained

Clinical courses are priced by location: they're taught by specialist clinical trainers, and the price depends on where you are and how far your trainer needs to travel. Send us your postcode and team size and we'll confirm the price within 48 hours. It's one price for the group, up to 10 staff — not per person.

Frequently asked questions

Does this course sign staff off as competent?

Your team leaves fully trained, with a certificate to show it. As with any clinical skill, the final step is your own supervised competency check, recorded in each person's competency log or personal development plan.

Can you tailor it to the people we support?

Yes. Tell us the tube types your team works with — cuffed or uncuffed, with or without an inner tube or speaking valve — and your trainer builds the session around them. If it's for one individual, give us anonymised details at booking.

Does it cover emergencies?

Yes. Managing a blocked or displaced tube and tracheostomy resuscitation are both covered, following current guidance.

Will our carers be changing tracheostomy tubes?

The course covers tube removal and changes, but who does what in practice depends on your policies, how clinical tasks are delegated in your service, and the person's care plan. In many services tube changes stay with nurses or specialist teams. Check your policy, and we're happy to talk it through.

Someone is being discharged to us soon — can you work to the date?

Tell us the discharge date when you enquire. We recommend booking at least four weeks in advance; we'll do our best to fit around it.

How often should staff refresh?

The certificate doesn't expire, but we recommend an annual refresher, since the skills fade, especially for staff who don't carry out tracheostomy care every day.

Why up to 10?

So everyone gets proper time on the practical skills.

Can it be done online?

Yes, live with a trainer, for refreshers. First-time learners should train on-site, because they need hands-on practice on the training model.

How quickly can you come?

We confirm within 48 hours, and we recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date. If you need something sooner, just ask.
