Who needs this training
Staff who help people wash, dress, move and reposition — the people most likely to notice skin changes first:
- Care staff and senior carers in nursing and residential homes
- Healthcare assistants
- Home care and supported living teams
- Team leaders who review repositioning charts and skin inspections
Nurses who assess wounds and choose dressings need Tissue Viability.
We recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy.
What the law says
Many pressure ulcers are avoidable, which is why regulators and commissioners look closely at them. In England, CQC expects care to be safe (Regulation 12) and staff to have the training they need for their role (Regulation 18); regulators in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland expect the same. NICE guidance on pressure ulcer prevention and management sets out risk assessment, skin inspection and repositioning.
Pressure damage can also raise safeguarding questions, so staff need to know how to record and report it.
How we assess learning
Learning is assessed through case studies, photographs of the pressure ulcer categories, discussion and questions.
Your trainer
Your trainer has used these skills for real. They focus on what care staff see every day — skin inspection, repositioning and the early signs that need reporting.
Logistics
- Room: horseshoe or classroom seating — what matters is clear floor space, with a screen or blank wall for slides
- The trainer brings: all general training equipment and the course materials
- Group size: up to 12, on-site or live online
- Timing: agreed with you when you enquire; staff arrive 15 minutes early
- Access: the trainer needs the room 45 minutes before the start
- Anywhere in the UK, or live online
- Live online: a quiet space and a device with camera and audio for each person joining — ideally one device each, and never more than two people per device
- More dates online: live online often has more dates available, so it's worth asking if you need training sooner or have people across several locations
- Literacy: we recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy

Frequently asked questions
How is this different from Tissue Viability?
This course is for care staff and healthcare assistants: preventing pressure damage, spotting the early signs and supporting simple wound care. Tissue Viability is for nurses, and senior staff who apply dressings: assessing wounds, the principles of wound healing, and choosing and applying dressings.
Does it cover the Waterlow score?
Yes. It covers risk assessment tools such as Waterlow and PURPOSE-T: what they measure, and how staff's day-to-day observations feed into them. Use the tool your service has chosen.
When should staff report pressure damage?
Straight away, to the nurse or senior on shift, in line with your policy. The course covers how to record and report it, and when it may also need a safeguarding referral.
Does it cover moisture-associated skin damage?
Yes: what it is and how to help prevent it. For continence care in more depth, see Continence Care.
Does it cover repositioning?
Yes: repositioning schedules and pressure-relieving equipment such as mattresses and cushions, at awareness level. Moving people safely is covered in Moving & Positioning People.
Can it be done online?
Yes, live with a trainer for up to 12 staff. On-site is better if you'd like the trainer to work through skin inspection and repositioning in your own setting.
How quickly can you come?
We confirm within 48 hours, and we recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date. If you need something sooner, just ask.
