What the law says
In England, CQC's Regulation 12 (safe care and treatment) requires the proper and safe management of medicines, and Regulation 18 expects staff to have the training they need for their role. NICE's guideline on managing medicines in care homes (SC1) says staff should give medicines only after the necessary training and an assessment by their employer, with an annual review of their knowledge and skills. NICE's guideline NG67 covers medicines support for adults receiving social care at home, including staff training.
NICE guidance is written for England. Care regulators in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own standards for managing medicines safely.
In our analysis of CQC care home reports, medicines were the most common named staff training gap at every rating, and in at least 4 in 10 of those the gap involved competency checks.

How we assess learning
Your trainer tests understanding throughout the day through questions, discussion and MAR chart exercises, and staff complete a quiz before the end.
Your trainer
Your trainer has used these skills for real, and teaches medicines safety in terms of your setting and your own policy. Send your policy in advance and they'll work with it on the day.

Frequently asked questions
Who needs medication administration training?
Health and social care staff who handle or give medicines: residential and nursing home teams, supported living and home care staff, and senior carers and team leaders responsible for medicines rounds. Train new starters before they give medicines, and existing staff when they're due a refresh.
How long does it take?
A full day, 09:30–16:30. Staff arrive 15 minutes early.
How many staff can attend, and what does it cost?
Up to 12 staff for £495+VAT for the day. It's one flat rate for the group, not per person. More than 12 to train? Book another day at the same flat rate.
Can it be done online?
Yes. We run it at your workplace anywhere in the UK, or live online with a trainer for up to 12 staff — not a recorded module.
Why not e-learning?
E-learning covers the theory. Here, a trainer works through MAR charts and real case studies with your staff, answers their questions about your policy, and tests learning with a quiz — that's where errors are prevented. Send your medicines policy in advance and your trainer will work with it on the day. For a full group of 12 it works out at around £41 a head.
Can staff give medicines straight after the course?
They leave fully trained and certified, ready for your own workplace sign-off. NICE guidance expects staff to give medicines only once they've been trained and assessed by their employer, with their knowledge and skills reviewed every year.
How long is the certificate valid?
Two years. Certificates are emailed the next day. It's a Kasorb certificate of completion, not a regulated qualification.
Does it cover insulin or buccal midazolam?
No. This course covers giving medicines safely in general. Specialist routes have their own courses, such as Buccal Midazolam and Diabetes Management & Insulin Administration.
