How Long Does a First Aid Certificate Last? UK Guide

Most workplace first aid certificates last three years. That covers Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW), First Aid at Work (FAW), Paediatric First Aid and Emergency Paediatric First Aid. Once a certificate expires, that person can no longer act as a first aider until they've retrained, so the date that matters is the one printed on the certificate, not the date someone remembers doing the course.

Resuscitation courses work differently. Many healthcare employers expect an annual update for staff who might respond to a cardiac arrest, whatever the certificate says.

Certificate validity at a glance

Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW)3 yearsRetake the one-day course
First Aid at Work (FAW)3 yearsTake the two-day requalification
Paediatric First Aid3 yearsRetake the full two-day course

Accredited and non-accredited versions last the same length of time. Accreditation changes who issues the certificate, not how long it's valid.

First Aid at Work: requalify before it expires

First Aid at Work is the one certificate with a shorter route to renewal. Before the three years are up, first aiders can take a two-day requalification course instead of the full three days. If the certificate has already expired, there's a short window: within about a month of expiry, they can usually still take the two-day course, but they can't act as a first aider in the meantime. After that, they need the full three-day course again.

Plan requalification a couple of months ahead. If several first aiders qualified on the same course, their certificates all expire on the same day, and a gap in cover is easy to miss.

EFAW and paediatric certificates

There's no shorter requalification for Emergency First Aid at Work or the paediatric courses. The course is the requalification: staff simply take it again before the certificate runs out.

For early years settings this matters more than most. Ofsted's early years framework requires at least one person with a current, full Paediatric First Aid certificate on the premises whenever children are present, and on outings. An expired certificate doesn't count, so track expiry dates for everyone in your ratios.

Annual refreshers

A three-year certificate doesn't mean three years of sharp skills. HSE strongly recommends that first aiders take an annual refresher between certificates, because CPR technique and confidence fade quickly when they aren't used. A refresher isn't a legal requirement, and it doesn't extend the certificate, but it's what keeps first aiders ready to act.

Kasorb runs a half-day First Aid at Work annual refresher, and because we charge a day rate, two refresher sessions can run on the same day for up to 24 staff.

BLS and ILS in healthcare

Resuscitation Council UK quality standards set the expectation that staff who may need to respond to a cardiac arrest have their skills updated regularly, commonly every year. That's why many care and healthcare employers book Basic Life Support annually even though the certificate lasts longer, and why ILS is usually refreshed every year.

Keeping track

  • Record the expiry date, not just the course date, for every first aider.
  • Look 60 days ahead each month, so retraining is booked before anyone lapses.
  • Stagger first aiders where you can, so certificates don't all expire at once.
  • Check your first aid needs assessment whenever a first aider leaves or a certificate lapses, so cover doesn't quietly drop below what you need. See how many first aiders you need.

Kasorb trains first aiders at your workplace anywhere in the UK, at one flat rate for up to 12 staff, with certificates emailed the next day.

FAQs

How long is a first aid certificate valid in the UK?

Three years for Emergency First Aid at Work, First Aid at Work, Paediatric First Aid and Emergency Paediatric First Aid. HSE strongly recommends an annual refresher in between.

Can I still act as a first aider if my certificate has expired?

No. Once the certificate expires, the person can't be counted as a first aider until they've retrained and passed.

Is there a grace period after a First Aid at Work certificate expires?

For First Aid at Work, staff can usually still take the two-day requalification if the certificate expired within about the last month, but they can't act as a first aider until they've passed. After that, the full three-day course is needed.

Does a first aid refresher extend the certificate?

No. An annual refresher keeps skills current, but the certificate still expires three years from the date it was issued.

Do accredited certificates last longer?

No. Qualsafe-accredited and Kasorb certificates for the same course last the same length of time.
