How it works

  1. Book online, with or without accreditation. We'll confirm within 48 hours. We recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date.
  2. Your trainer calls beforehand to confirm the room and logistics, and arrives 45 minutes early to set up.
  3. One day, 09:30 to 17:00, with a lunch break and two short breaks.
  4. Everyone practises and is assessed on infant and child manikins.
  5. Certificates are emailed the next day.

What the course covers

  • The role and responsibilities of a paediatric first aider
  • Assessing an emergency situation
  • Dealing with an unresponsive infant or child
  • The recovery position
  • CPR and defibrillation for infants and children
  • Seizures
  • Choking
  • External bleeding and shock
  • Catastrophic bleeding and tourniquets (optional)
  • Head, neck and back injuries
  • Bites and stings
  • Minor injuries

By the end, your staff will:

  • understand the role of the paediatric first aider
  • be able to assess an emergency safely
  • be able to give first aid to an infant or child who is unresponsive, choking, bleeding or in shock
  • know how to provide first aid to an infant or child with minor injuries

Who needs this training

Anyone who looks after infants and children at work:

  • Schools, after-school and holiday clubs
  • Sports clubs and youth organisations
  • Nurseries and early years settings — for staff counted in ratios alongside at least one person with full Paediatric First Aid
  • Children's residential and short-break services

Early years settings: Ofsted's early years framework requires at least one person with a full Paediatric First Aid certificate on site whenever children are present. This one-day course is the emergency version — see our full Paediatric First Aid course for that.

Entry requirements: staff must be at least 14 on the day. We recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy.

What the law says

In early years settings, Ofsted's early years framework sets the paediatric first aid rules: at least one person with a full Paediatric First Aid certificate on the premises at all times, and newly qualified staff counted in ratios holding either the full or the emergency certificate. Schools and other settings decide their first aid cover from a needs assessment. Either way, the qualification needs practical assessment in person — which is why this course is on-site only.

How we assess learning

Five practical assessments — infant CPR and safe use of an AED, child CPR and safe use of an AED, the choking casualty, paediatric wounds, bleeding and shock, and the unconscious casualty — plus an optional sixth on catastrophic bleeding, and a multiple-choice theory paper. The practical involves kneeling and working at floor level, so staff need appropriate clothing and footwear. If anyone has an injury or condition that might get in the way, tell us when you book.

Your trainer

Your trainer has used these skills for real, and brings infant and child manikins, AED trainers and everything else needed for the practical.

Logistics

  • Room: horseshoe or classroom seating — what matters is clear floor space to work at ground level — allow roughly a square metre of clear floor per person
  • You provide: a flipchart and pens, and a clear wall or screen for the projector
  • Staff bring: identification — photo ID for the accredited version; any ID is fine otherwise
  • Group size: up to 12
  • Access: the trainer needs the room 45 minutes before the start
  • Anywhere in the UK, on-site only

Cost explained

£395+VAT for the whole group, up to 12 staff. Add Qualsafe accreditation for an additional £100+VAT on the course, not per person — £495+VAT accredited, whatever the group size.

Is it good value? Open courses typically cost around £80–£120 a head, plus travel and a day away. Our flat rate is cheaper from about four staff, and at twelve it's around £33 each.

More than 12 to train? Book a second day at the same flat rate. Several sites? Book each site through our booking site at no extra cost, or we'll arrange them for a £100+VAT admin fee.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between emergency and full Paediatric First Aid?

Emergency Paediatric First Aid is one day; full Paediatric First Aid is 12 hours over two days. We run both.

Covered in both courses:

  • Roles and responsibilities of the paediatric first aider
  • Assessing an emergency situation
  • Recovery position
  • CPR and defibrillation
  • Choking
  • Seizures
  • Bleeding and shock
  • Bites and stings

Only in the full two-day course:

  • Head, neck and back injuries
  • Anaphylaxis and allergic reactions
  • Meningitis
  • Asthma
  • Febrile convulsions
  • Diabetic emergencies
  • Poisoning
  • Burns and scalds
  • Electric shock
  • Eye, ear and nose conditions
  • Extremes of temperature

The full course is the one early years settings need for at least one person on site at all times.

Does this meet Ofsted's early years requirements?

It's the emergency certificate staff in ratios can hold, alongside at least one person on site with full Paediatric First Aid. Ofsted doesn't require an accredited certificate, but some settings' internal policies do — if yours does, choose the Qualsafe-accredited version.

What's the difference between accredited and non-accredited?

The course and three-year validity are the same. With accreditation you get the Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Emergency Paediatric First Aid (RQF), issued by an Ofqual-regulated awarding organisation, and each person gets a reference booklet. It costs an additional £100+VAT for the whole course.

How long does the certificate last?

Three years. Staff retake the course before it expires to stay qualified.

Can it be done online?

No. CPR, choking and the recovery position have to be practised and assessed in person.

Is there a minimum age?

Staff must be at least 14 on the day of the course.

How quickly can you come?

We confirm bookings within 48 hours, and we recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date. If you need something sooner, just ask.
