How it works
- Enquire with your postcode, team size and a little about your setting and the situations your staff face. We'll come back with a price within 48 hours. We recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date. If you need something sooner, just ask.
- Agree the group size with us, based on your risk assessment and the space you have, so everyone gets proper practice.
- Your trainer calls beforehand to confirm logistics and understand your setting.
- Three hours: de-escalation and safe positioning first, then the breakaway techniques, practised under the trainer's supervision.
- Certificates are emailed the next day.
What the course covers
- A refresher on positive behaviour support, and the underlying causes of behaviour that challenges
- Considering risk in care plans
- Creating and keeping a safe space, situational awareness and positive body language
- Protecting yourself from blows, and minimising the risk from pinching, scratching and biting
- Releasing from grabs on clothes, wrists, hair or neck, and from holds and strangles
- What to do after an incident, to help prevent the next one
Who needs this training
Staff who could be grabbed or hit while supporting people whose behaviour can challenge:
- Care and support workers in residential, supported living and home care services
- Staff in mental health, learning disability and autism services
- Community and lone workers
- Team leaders who manage incidents and debriefs
It isn't restraint or physical intervention training. NHS-commissioned learning disability, autism or mental health service? If your commissioner requires RRN-certified training, this course won't meet that requirement.
We recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy.
What the law says
Employers must protect staff from foreseeable risks at work, including violence and aggression — under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 in Great Britain, with equivalent law in Northern Ireland. Where your risk assessment shows staff could be grabbed or assaulted, training in de-escalation and breakaway is one of the ways to reduce that risk, and it gives you evidence for your training file.
This course is non-restrictive: it teaches no restraint or restrictive intervention, and it isn't certified against the Restraint Reduction Network (RRN) Training Standards. Services whose commissioners require RRN-certified training need a certified programme.
How we assess learning
Each technique is practised under the trainer's supervision, with feedback, and understanding is checked through questions and discussion. The practical involves movement and some contact between staff, so people need to be physically able to take part. If anyone has an injury or condition that might get in the way, tell us when you book.
Your trainer
Your trainer has used these skills for real. They start with de-escalation and keep the techniques simple, so staff can remember them under pressure.
Logistics
- Room: horseshoe or classroom seating — what matters is clear floor space for the practical
- The trainer brings: all general training equipment

- Timing: three hours, morning 09:30–12:30 or afternoon 13:30–16:30; staff arrive 15 minutes early
- Access: the trainer needs the room 45 minutes before the start
- Anywhere in the UK, on-site only
- Literacy: we recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy

Frequently asked questions
Is this RRN-certified?
No. It's non-restrictive breakaway (disengagement) training, with no restraint or restrictive intervention, and it isn't certified against the Restraint Reduction Network (RRN) Training Standards. If your commissioner requires RRN-certified training, you'll need a certified programme.
Does it include restraint?
No. It's disengagement only: getting away safely from a grab, hold or strike, then leaving and getting help.
Is it physically demanding?
The techniques are designed not to depend on strength, but staff need to be able to take part in the practical. Tell us about any injuries or conditions when you book.
How many staff can train at once?
We agree the group size with you when you enquire, based on your risk assessment and the space you have, so everyone gets proper practice under supervision.
How is this different from positive behaviour support training?
Positive behaviour support (PBS) training is about understanding why behaviour that challenges happens, and preventing it. Breakaway is the practical last resort: getting away safely if someone grabs or strikes you. The two work well together.
Can it be done online?
No. It's practical, so it's on-site only.
How quickly can you come?
We confirm within 48 hours, and we recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date. If you need something sooner, just ask.
