Compliance and certification
Staff receive a Kasorb certificate of completion, which doesn't expire; we recommend a refresher every three years, or sooner if your policy asks for it. It's non-physical training in understanding behaviour and de-escalation — no restrictive practice is taught. It isn't a regulated qualification.

What the course covers
- What "behaviour that challenges" means
- Possible causes and triggers
- The function of behaviour for the person
- Response strategies and de-escalation
- Recording and reporting
- Your role and responsibilities
Who needs this training
Care and support staff working with people whose behaviour can make it hard to give the best care:
- Learning disability and autism services
- Dementia care
- Mental health services and supported living
- Children's residential and education settings
- Team leaders and managers who review incidents
We recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy.
What the law says
In England, CQC's Regulation 13 says people must not be restrained unless it's necessary to prevent harm and proportionate, and Regulation 18 expects staff to have the training they need to support people safely. NICE guidance on behaviour that challenges and on violence and aggression puts understanding the reasons for behaviour, and de-escalation, ahead of any restrictive intervention.
This course gives staff the understanding and de-escalation skills that come first. If your staff use restrictive interventions, they need separate training in those. The course gives you training evidence for your file.
How we assess learning
Your trainer reviews learning throughout the day through questions, case studies and role play.
Your trainer
Your trainer has used these skills for real, and brings examples from services like yours — so the de-escalation strategies fit the people your staff support.
Logistics
- Room: horseshoe or classroom seating — what matters is clear floor space — with a projector screen or blank wall
- The trainer brings: projector, laptop, flipchart and all general training equipment
- Group size: up to 12, on-site or live online
- Timing: 09:30–16:30; staff arrive 15 minutes early
- Access: the trainer needs the room 45 minutes before the start
- Anywhere in the UK, or live online
- Live online: a quiet space and a device with camera and audio for each person joining — ideally one device each, and never more than two people per device
- More dates online: live online often has more dates available, so it's worth asking if you need training sooner or have people across several locations
- Literacy: we recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy

Frequently asked questions
Does it include restraint or physical intervention?
No. It's non-physical — no restrictive practice is taught. It focuses on understanding behaviour and de-escalating before situations escalate.
How does it relate to Positive Behaviour Support?
It's a practical foundation. Our Positive Behaviour Support course goes further into planning and support strategies.
How is it different from Breakaway training?
This course is about preventing incidents through understanding and de-escalation. Breakaway teaches staff how to get away safely if someone grabs or holds them.
Does it cover recording and reporting?
Yes — what to record after an incident, how to describe behaviour objectively, and how records help you spot triggers and patterns.
Can it be done online?
Yes, live with a trainer, for up to 12 staff — not a recorded module. Role play works online too, in small groups.
How long does the certificate last?
It doesn't expire. We recommend a refresher every three years.
How quickly can you come?
We confirm bookings within 48 hours, and we recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date. If you need something sooner, just ask.
