Who needs this training
All staff — frontline, senior and management — in health and social care services, especially learning disability, autism and mental health services.
We recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy.
What the law says
CQC defines a closed culture as a poor culture that can lead to harm, including human rights breaches such as abuse, and has published guidance on identifying and responding to closed cultures. In England, CQC's Regulation 13 requires registered providers to protect people from abuse and improper treatment, and Regulation 17 (good governance) expects effective oversight of the quality and safety of the service.
Staff who raise concerns in the public interest are protected by whistleblowing law — the Public Interest Disclosure Act 1998 in Great Britain, with equivalent law in Northern Ireland.
How we assess learning
Learning is checked throughout the day through case studies and reflection, and staff finish by drawing up an action plan for your service.
Your trainer
Your trainer has used these skills for real, and runs the day as a discussion — with case studies, reflection and an action plan for your own service. The subject is handled with care: some staff may have raised concerns, or seen poor practice, in places they've worked.

Frequently asked questions
Is this only for managers?
No. Frontline staff often see the first warning signs, so it's for everyone. We can also run it for your leadership team, with a focus on governance, oversight and culture — tell us when you book.
Does it cover whistleblowing?
Yes — how to raise concerns inside and outside the organisation, and how leaders make it safe for staff to speak up.
Can it be done online?
Yes, on request — a live online version with a trainer is available, so just ask. The Book button books on-site training at your premises.
How is this different from safeguarding training?
Safeguarding Adults teaches staff to recognise, report and record abuse and neglect. Closed cultures training looks at the culture of a whole service — how poor practice becomes normal and goes unchallenged, and how to prevent it.
How long does the certificate last?
Three years, with an annual refresher recommended.
Can we train more than 12?
Yes. Book another day at the same flat rate.
How quickly can you come?
We confirm within 48 hours, and we recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date. If you need something sooner, just ask.
