- One day, 09:30–16:30, working through real case studies.
- Certificates are emailed the next day.

Who needs this training
Registered nurses, managers, team leaders and senior carers who write or sign off care records — in care homes, nursing homes, supported living, home care and health services.
We recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy.
What the law says
In England, CQC's Regulation 17 (good governance) requires providers to keep an accurate, complete and contemporaneous record for each person using the service. Registered nurses are also accountable for their records under the NMC Code, which expects them to keep clear and accurate records relevant to their practice.
Records must be handled lawfully under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018, and in England and Wales the Mental Capacity Act 2005 shapes how consent and capacity decisions are recorded. When something goes wrong — a complaint, a safeguarding enquiry, an inquest or a claim — the records are the evidence.
How we assess learning
Learning is checked throughout the day through case studies, discussion and questions.
Your trainer
Your trainer has used these skills for real, and teaches documentation through case studies — what went wrong in real records, what it led to, and what would have made them defensible — so staff leave knowing how to write records that stand up.
Logistics
- Room: seating for up to 12, classroom style, with a projector screen or blank wall
- The trainer brings: projector, laptop, flipchart and all general training equipment

- Timing: 09:30–16:30; staff arrive 15 minutes early
- Access: the trainer needs the room 45 minutes before the start
- Anywhere in the UK, or live online
- Live online: a quiet space and a device with camera and audio for each person joining — ideally one device each, and never more than two people per device

Frequently asked questions
Is it only for nurses?
No. Managers, team leaders and senior carers who write or sign off records benefit just as much. The NMC Code content is most relevant to registered nurses, but the principles apply to anyone who writes care records.
Does it cover coroners' inquests?
Yes — how records are used in inquests, complaints and litigation, and what makes them defensible.
Does it cover data protection?
Yes. Staff learn the data protection and GDPR essentials for care records, alongside consent, capacity and accountability.
Can it be done online?
Yes, live with a trainer, for up to 12 staff — not a recorded module. It's discussion- and case study-based, so it works well online.
How long does the certificate last?
We recommend refreshing every three years, or sooner if your own policy requires.
Can we train more than 12?
Yes. Book another day at the same flat rate.
How quickly can you come?
We confirm within 48 hours, and we recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date. If you need something sooner, just ask.
