What the law says
In England, CQC-registered providers must make sure staff receive training on learning disability and autism appropriate to their role — a requirement added by the Health and Care Act 2022. The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training is the government's preferred programme for that; this course adds depth on Down's syndrome alongside it and isn't a substitute. CQC also expects staff to have the training they need to meet people's needs (Regulation 18), and regulators in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland expect the same.
The Down Syndrome Act 2022 requires the government to give guidance to health, social care, education and housing bodies in England on meeting the needs of people with Down's syndrome.
How we assess learning
Learning is assessed through case studies, discussion and questions.
Your trainer
Your trainer has used these skills for real. They keep the focus on the person, and on the everyday support that helps people stay healthy and independent.
Logistics
- Room: horseshoe or classroom seating — what matters is clear floor space, with a screen or blank wall for slides
- The trainer brings: all general training equipment and the course materials
- Group size: up to 12, on-site or live online
- Timing: agreed with you when you enquire; staff arrive 15 minutes early
- Access: the trainer needs the room 45 minutes before the start
- Anywhere in the UK, or live online
- Live online: a quiet space and a device with camera and audio for each person joining — ideally one device each, and never more than two people per device
- More dates online: live online often has more dates available, so it's worth asking if you need training sooner or have people across several locations
- Literacy: we recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy

Frequently asked questions
Does it cover dementia?
Yes. People with Down's syndrome have a much higher risk of developing Alzheimer's disease, and at a younger age than the wider population. The course covers early signs to look out for, and how support changes as needs change. For dementia care in more depth, see Dementia Awareness.
Is this the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training?
No. It's additional awareness training on Down's syndrome.
Which health conditions does it cover?
Conditions that are more common in people with Down's syndrome, such as heart conditions, thyroid problems, hearing and sight problems, and earlier-onset dementia — and why annual GP health reviews and health action plans matter.
Does it cover communication?
Yes: approaches that help people understand and be understood, such as clear, simple language, visual supports and giving people time to respond.
How is this different from Autism Awareness?
Autism Awareness is about autism. This course is about Down's syndrome, including the health conditions and ageing that come with it. Some people have both, and the two courses fit together.
Can it be done online?
Yes, live with a trainer for up to 12 staff — not a recorded module.
How quickly can you come?
We confirm within 48 hours, and we recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date. If you need something sooner, just ask.
