Course specification
How it works
- Book online and tell us the make of your evacuation chair if you know it. Make sure the chair's maintenance is up to date before the training. We'll confirm within 48 hours. We recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date.
- Check staff have done moving and handling training. Most care staff already have it — our Moving & Handling People course, or any annual moving and handling training covering theory and objects, counts. If they don't have it, book our three-hour Manual Handling course in the morning and evacuation chair training in the afternoon.
- Your trainer calls beforehand to confirm the room, the stairs and the equipment.
- Three hours, mostly practical: your evacuation procedure, how the chair works, preparation and transfers, then going down your own stairs — with staff taking turns as the passenger, under the trainer's supervision.
- Certificates are emailed the next day.
What the course covers
- A refresher on safe moving and handling principles
- Your site's evacuation procedure, where available
- What the evacuation chair is, and when to use it
- Safety instructions
- How the chair works, and preparing it for use
- Transferring someone into the chair
- Manoeuvring across floors and down or up stairs
- Cleaning, care and storage
- Practical assessments
By the end, your staff will:
- know when to use the evacuation chair
- feel confident with the different ways of using it
- know the care, maintenance and storage requirements
Other evacuation equipment: training on AlbacMats and evacuation sheets is also available, as a separate session. Ask when you book.
Who needs this training
Anyone who may have to help evacuate someone with limited mobility:
- Care home and nursing home staff
- Fire marshals and wardens in multi-storey buildings
- Staff named in personal emergency evacuation plans (PEEPs)
- Hospital, clinic, school, office and hotel teams with evacuation equipment
Before this course: staff need moving and handling training covering theory and objects. Most care staff already meet this through their annual moving and handling training or our Moving & Handling People course; if not, book our Manual Handling course first. We recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy.
What the law says
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (England and Wales), the responsible person must make sure everyone can get out safely in a fire, including people who can't use the stairs unaided. Where your fire risk assessment or someone's personal emergency evacuation plan relies on an evacuation chair or mat, the staff expected to use it need to be trained on it — and able to do it without hesitation when it matters. Scotland has equivalent duties under the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005.
How we assess learning
Practical assessments on your equipment. The course involves bending, kneeling and floor-level work, so staff need suitable clothing and footwear and need to be physically able to take part. If anyone has an injury or condition that might get in the way, tell us when you book.
Your trainer
Your trainer comes from the fire industry or from moving and positioning, with specific training in evacuation equipment. They teach on the equipment in your building, so your team practises with the chair and stairs they'd actually use.
Logistics
- Space: a room for the introduction, and access to a staircase for the practical
- You provide: your evacuation equipment, with its maintenance checked and up to date before the training, plus a projector screen or blank wall
- The trainer brings: laptop and projector

- Timing: morning 09:30–12:30 or afternoon 13:30–16:30; staff arrive 15 minutes early
- Access: the trainer needs the room 45 minutes before the start
- Anywhere in the UK, on-site only

Frequently asked questions
Is evacuation chair training a legal requirement?
The law requires the responsible person to make sure everyone can evacuate safely, including people who can't manage the stairs. If your plan relies on an evacuation chair, the people expected to use it need to be trained — an untrained operator on a staircase is a risk in itself.
Our chair supplier offers training — why use you?
We're independent: we train on any make of chair, on-site, around your own building and evacuation plan, alongside the moving and handling principles that keep staff and the passenger safe. And we're not selling you the equipment.
Who sits in the chair during practice?
Staff take turns as the passenger, under the trainer's supervision, so everyone experiences it from both sides — which makes them better, calmer operators.
Do you use our chair?
Yes. Staff train on the chair in your building, on your own stairs, so they know that equipment. Let us know the make when you book.
We don't have an evacuation chair yet — can we still book?
Ask us first. The training is built around your equipment, so it works best once your chair is in place.
Why 3 to 8 people?
At least three, so staff can take turns operating the chair and acting as the passenger. No more than eight, so everyone gets proper practice on the stairs, with time for feedback. The rate's the same either way.
Do staff need anything beforehand?
Yes — moving and handling training covering theory and objects. Most care staff already have it through their annual training or our Moving & Handling People course. If not, book our Manual Handling course first.
How often should staff refresh?
The certificate is valid for 12 months. Evacuation chairs are used rarely, which is exactly why the skill fades — an annual refresher keeps staff ready.
Can it be done online?
No. It's practical — staff take the chair down real stairs — so it's on-site only.
How quickly can you come?
We confirm bookings within 48 hours, and we recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date. If you need something sooner, just ask.
