- Your trainer calls beforehand to confirm the room, the vehicle and the wheelchairs.
- Three hours, including a break: safety, liability and the equipment, then securing wheelchairs and passengers in your own vehicle.
- Certificates are emailed the next day.

Who needs this training
Anyone who secures wheelchair users in a vehicle:

- Passenger assistants and escorts
- Care and support staff who accompany people on journeys

Before this course: staff need moving and handling training covering objects and people, such as bed-to-wheelchair transfers, within the last 12 months. We recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy.
What the law says
Employers must make sure work equipment is used safely and that the people using it have adequate training — under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 in Great Britain, with equivalent regulations in Northern Ireland. A wheelchair-accessible vehicle and its tie-down and occupant restraint system are work equipment, and the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 also requires employers to protect the people they transport, not just their staff.
In care settings in England, CQC's Regulation 12 (safe care and treatment) expects providers to make sure the equipment they use is used safely — including the vehicles and equipment used to transport the people they support.
How we assess learning
Learning is checked through observed practice in your vehicle, and questions throughout the session. Securing a wheelchair means bending and kneeling in the vehicle, so staff need clothing and footwear they can move in. If anyone has an injury or condition that might get in the way, tell us when you book.
Your trainer
Your trainer has used these skills for real, and teaches securement in your own vehicle, with your own wheelchairs and tie-down system — so staff practise on the equipment they'll actually use.

Frequently asked questions
Do you use our vehicle?
Yes. The practical takes place in your own wheelchair-accessible vehicle, with your own wheelchairs and securement system, so staff train on exactly what they'll use. You'll need the vehicle and at least one wheelchair — ideally two or three.
Do staff need anything first?
Yes — moving and handling training covering objects and people, such as bed-to-wheelchair transfers, within the last 12 months.
How is this different from moving and handling training?
Moving & Handling People covers moving and transferring people safely. This course starts where that ends: securing the wheelchair and the person in it for the journey.
Can it be done online?
No. It's practical, in your own vehicle, so it's on-site only.
How long does the certificate last?
Three years, with an annual refresher recommended.
Can we train more than 10?
Yes. Book another session at the same flat rate.
How quickly can you come?
We confirm bookings within 48 hours, and we recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date. If you need something sooner, just ask.
