How it works
- Book online for live online training, or ask us for on-site delivery. We'll confirm within 48 hours. We recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date — live online offers the best availability of dates.
- Your trainer calls beforehand to confirm logistics, and to understand your setting and the children and young people you work with.
- One day (6 hours), with breaks — discussion-based, working through scenarios. The subject is handled with care, without graphic detail.
- Certificates are emailed the next day.

Who needs this training

- Youth workers and youth justice teams
We recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy.
What the law says
In England, Ofsted inspects children's homes, fostering services and schools on how well they keep children safe — including from harm caused by other children. For schools, the statutory guidance Keeping Children Safe in Education expects staff to recognise and respond to child-on-child abuse, including sexual violence and sexual harassment. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own guidance and inspectorates.
Staff who can judge behaviour consistently and respond in proportion — without under- or over-reacting — are central to that, and the training gives you evidence for your training file.
How we assess learning
Learning is checked through discussion, scenarios and questions throughout the day.
Your trainer
Your trainer has used these skills for real, and runs the day as a professional discussion, not a lecture. The subject is handled with care — some staff may have their own experience of abuse, and the trainer allows for that.
Logistics
- Live online: a quiet space and a device with camera and audio for each person joining — ideally one device each, and never more than two people per device
- More dates online: live online often has more dates available, so it's worth asking if you need training sooner or have people across several locations
- On-site, on request: horseshoe or classroom seating for up to 12 — what matters is clear floor space — with a projector screen or blank wall
- The trainer brings: projector, laptop, flipchart and all general training equipment
- Group size: up to 12, live online or on-site
- Timing: 09:30–16:30, with breaks; staff arrive or log in 15 minutes early
- Access: on-site, the trainer needs the room 45 minutes before the start
- Anywhere in the UK, or live online
- Literacy: we recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy
Cost explained
£995+VAT for the day, up to 12 staff. One flat rate for the group, not per person — live online, or on-site on request at the same flat rate.
More than 12? Book another day at the same flat rate. Several sites? Book each site through our booking site at no extra cost, or we'll arrange them for a £100+VAT admin fee.
Frequently asked questions
Does it use Hackett's continuum?
Yes. Hackett's sexual behaviour continuum runs through the day, so staff judge behaviour the same way — from developmentally typical, through problematic and inappropriate, to harmful — and respond in proportion.
Does it cover online behaviour?
Yes. Technology-assisted harmful sexual behaviour is part of the course, alongside behaviour in person.
Is it for schools as well as children's homes?
Yes — it's for anyone working with children and young people, including residential children's homes, fostering services, schools, alternative provision and youth services.
Can you deliver it on-site?
Yes, on request, for up to 12 staff at the same flat rate — ask us. The Book button books the live online version, with a trainer, not a recorded module.
How is this different from designated safeguarding lead training?
Designated safeguarding lead training covers the whole of the lead's role, across every kind of abuse. This course goes deep on one area: recognising and responding to sexual behaviour in children and young people, for everyone who works with them.
Why not e-learning?
Judging where a behaviour sits on the continuum takes discussion, not a quiz. A trainer works through scenarios with your team, so staff practise the judgements they'll actually need to make and can ask about their own setting. For a full group of 12 it works out at around £83 a head.
How quickly can you come?
We confirm bookings within 48 hours, and we recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date. If you need something sooner, just ask — live online often has more dates available.
