How it works

  1. Enquire with your postcode, group size and preferred dates. We'll come back with a price within 48 hours. We recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date — live online offers the best availability of dates. If you need something sooner, just ask.
  2. Confirm your date once you're happy with the price. If you'd like the trainer to refer to your key worker policy, send it in advance.
  3. Your trainer calls beforehand to confirm logistics, and to understand your service and your team.
  4. On the day, on-site or live online — discussion-based, with case studies.
  5. Certificates are emailed the next day.

What the course covers

  • What a key worker is, and isn't
  • Building a trusting relationship
  • Person-centred planning and reviews
  • Working with families and professionals
  • Advocacy: speaking up for the person
  • Records and handovers
  • Boundaries in the key worker relationship

Who needs this training

Staff taking on, or already in, a key worker role:

  • Support workers and care staff in adult services
  • Residential and support staff in children's services
  • Senior carers and team leaders who allocate and supervise key workers

We recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy.

What the law says

In England, CQC's Regulation 9 (person-centred care) expects care to be appropriate, meet people's needs and reflect their preferences, and Regulation 17 (good governance) expects an accurate, complete and up-to-date record for each person. A named key worker is one of the ways services make both happen day to day.

What the key worker role involves is usually set by your own policy, so the course works alongside it.

How we assess learning

The trainer tests understanding through case studies and questions throughout the session.

Your trainer

Your trainer has used these skills for real, and uses examples from your type of service so staff can see what good key working looks like day to day.

Logistics

  • Room: horseshoe or classroom seating — what matters is clear floor space — with a projector screen or blank wall
  • The trainer brings: projector, laptop, flipchart and all general training equipment
  • Group size: up to 12 per session, on-site or live online
  • Timing: agreed with you when you enquire; staff arrive 15 minutes early
  • Access: the trainer needs the room 45 minutes before the start
  • Anywhere in the UK, or live online
  • Live online: a quiet space and a device with camera and audio for each person joining — ideally one device each, and never more than two people per device
  • More dates online: live online often has more dates available, so it's worth asking if you need training sooner or have people across several locations
  • Literacy: we recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy

Frequently asked questions

Is this for children's or adult services?

Both. Tell us about your service and the trainer adapts the examples.

Can it follow our own key worker policy?

Yes. Send your policy in advance and the trainer will refer to it during the session.

Who is it for — new or experienced key workers?

Both. It suits staff taking on the role for the first time, and key workers who want a refresh.

How is this different from care planning training?

Care planning training covers writing and reviewing care plans. This course covers the key worker's wider role: the relationship, coordinating with families and professionals, advocacy, and keeping plans and reviews on track.

Does it cover professional boundaries?

Yes, within the key worker relationship. For more depth, see Professional Boundaries.

Can it be done online?

Yes, live with a trainer, for up to 12 staff — not a recorded module. It's discussion-based, so it works well online.

How quickly can you come?

We confirm within 48 hours, and we recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date — live online offers the best availability of dates. If you need something sooner, just ask.
