Very well structured training, clear and easy to understand. Well paced with real world examples. Really good trainer.

Trusted by health, workplace and care teams across the UK

Compliance and certification

This is awareness-level training for staff who work with or around water systems. It covers what the Health and Safety Executive's Approved Code of Practice (L8) and technical guidance (HSG274) expect day to day, so your team understands the risks and the controls in your written scheme. It trains the team who carry out the controls your responsible person oversees; it isn't a qualification for the responsible person role itself, or for carrying out a Legionella risk assessment. Staff receive a Kasorb certificate of completion; it doesn't expire, but we recommend a refresher every three years, or every year if the controls aren't part of someone's routine.

How it works

  1. Book online. We'll confirm within 48 hours. We recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date.
  2. Send us your water management plan, or your latest Legionella risk assessment from your water hygiene contractor, if you have one. It helps your trainer shape the session around your building.
  3. 4.5 hours in the classroom, with breaks, at your workplace or live online. Your trainer asks about your building and water system as the session goes, so the controls are discussed in terms of your own outlets, tanks and routines.
  4. Certificates are emailed the next day.

What the course covers

  • Understanding Legionella bacteria, how they enter water systems and how Legionnaires' disease is contracted
  • Identifying Legionella illnesses, symptoms, susceptibility and routes of transmission
  • Pneumonia and Legionella's impact on the lungs
  • Conditions that Legionella favours for proliferation
  • Understanding aerosol generation
  • The basics behind the Approved Code of Practice (L8) and HSG274
  • The management pathway and Legionella risk assessment
  • The written scheme, risk systems and inspection and monitoring of cold-water systems

By the end, your staff will:

  • understand the risk of Legionella bacteria in hot and cold, and cooling water systems
  • be aware of the symptoms and illnesses Legionella can cause, and routes of transmission
  • understand the responsibilities and importance of the management pathways
  • know the basics behind a Legionella risk assessment
  • be aware of the inspection and monitoring practices for hot and cold-water systems

Who needs this training

Staff who work with water systems, or whose routine includes the everyday controls:

  • Care home and nursing home staff — especially where showers and baths are used by people at higher risk
  • Maintenance and facilities teams
  • Housekeeping and domestic staff who flush little-used outlets or clean showerheads
  • Housing, hotel and school site staff
  • Managers who need to understand their organisation's duties

If you're the responsible person, this is the course for the team who carry out the controls you oversee — and it's a useful refresher on what they should be doing. It isn't a qualification for the responsible person role itself, or for carrying out Legionella risk assessments.

What the law says

Under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and COSHH, employers and those in control of premises must identify and control the risk from Legionella. HSE's Approved Code of Practice (L8) and its technical guidance (HSG274) set out how: a risk assessment by a competent person, a written scheme of control, a named responsible person, and records kept for at least five years. Staff carrying out the controls need to understand what they're doing and why — which is what this course gives them.

In care settings, CQC also looks at it: Regulation 15 covers safe, well-maintained premises, and Regulation 12 covers preventing and controlling infection. Being able to show that the staff doing your water checks are trained is part of that evidence.

How we assess learning

A 7-question multiple-choice knowledge check at the end — as polls when delivered live online, or on paper face to face.

Your trainer

The session is classroom-based. Where you send them in advance, your trainer reads your policies and your water management plan or risk assessment — and asks your staff about your building and water system as they go, so the training reflects your own system rather than a generic one.

Logistics

  • Room: seating for up to 12, with a projector screen or blank wall
  • The trainer brings: projector, laptop, flipchart and all general training equipment
  • Group size: up to 12, one session a day, on-site or live online
  • Timing: 4.5 hours, at times to suit you within the working day
  • Access: the trainer needs the room 30 minutes before the start
  • Anywhere in the UK, or live online — live with a trainer, not e-learning
  • Online: a quiet space and a device with camera and audio for each person joining — ideally one each, and no more than two people per device
  • More dates online: live online often has more dates available, so it's worth asking if you need training sooner
  • Literacy: we recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy

Frequently asked questions

Is this responsible-person training?

It's awareness training for the team who carry out the controls — the people the responsible person relies on. It isn't a qualification for the responsible person role itself, or for carrying out Legionella risk assessments.

Why not an e-learning course?

E-learning gives everyone the same slides. Here, a trainer works through your own water management plan and your building with your staff, and answers their questions about the outlets, tanks and routines they actually deal with. For a full group of 12 it works out at around £41 a head.

Will this satisfy CQC?

CQC wants to see that your premises are safe and that infection risks are controlled, and training the staff who carry out your water checks is part of that evidence. Each person gets a certificate for your training file.

Does the trainer inspect our water system?

No. The session is classroom-based. Your trainer asks about your building and system as you go, so the controls are discussed in terms of your own setup, but they don't inspect or assess it — that's your water hygiene contractor's role.

How long does the certificate last?

It doesn't expire, but we recommend a refresher every three years — or every year for staff who don't carry out the controls as part of their normal routine, since the detail fades.

Can it be done online?

Yes, live with a trainer, for up to 12 staff. It's knowledge-based, so it works well online.

Can we train more than 12?

Yes. Book another day at the same flat rate — it's one 4.5-hour session a day.

How quickly can you come?

We confirm bookings within 48 hours, and we recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date. If you need something sooner, just ask.
