What the law says
MAPPA (multi-agency public protection arrangements) are statutory arrangements in England and Wales, set up under sections 325 to 327 of the Criminal Justice Act 2003, for managing the risk posed by certain sexual, violent and terrorist offenders. The police, probation and prison services form the responsible authority in each area, and other agencies — including social care and health bodies — have a duty to co-operate with them.
A MARAC (multi-agency risk assessment conference) is a meeting where agencies share information on the highest-risk domestic abuse cases and agree actions to make each victim safer. MARACs aren't statutory, and health, social care and housing services are often asked to take part.
Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own public protection arrangements; this course covers England and Wales.
How we assess learning
The trainer tests understanding through case studies and questions throughout the session.
Your trainer
Your trainer has used these skills for real, and explains the arrangements in plain terms — who does what, and what your staff need to do when a case involves your service.
Logistics
- Room: horseshoe or classroom seating — what matters is clear floor space — with a projector screen or blank wall
- The trainer brings: projector, laptop, flipchart and all general training equipment
- Group size: up to 12 per session, on-site or live online
- Timing: agreed with you when you enquire; staff arrive 15 minutes early
- Access: the trainer needs the room 45 minutes before the start
- Anywhere in the UK, or live online
- Live online: a quiet space and a device with camera and audio for each person joining — ideally one device each, and never more than two people per device
- More dates online: live online often has more dates available, so it's worth asking if you need training sooner or have people across several locations
- Literacy: we recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between MAPPA and MARAC?
MAPPA manages the risk posed by certain sexual, violent and terrorist offenders. A MARAC focuses on keeping victims of high-risk domestic abuse safe. Both bring agencies together to share information and act on it.
We only support people under MAPPA occasionally. Is this worth it?
Yes, if staff need to know their role and when to share information when a case comes up.
Does it cover domestic abuse more widely?
It covers MARAC and identifying risk in domestic abuse. It isn't a full domestic abuse awareness course.
Does it cover Scotland or Northern Ireland?
No. It covers MAPPA and MARAC as they work in England and Wales. Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own public protection arrangements.
Can the trainer use examples from our type of service?
Yes. Tell us about your service when you enquire, and the trainer uses case studies that fit it.
Can it be done online?
Yes, live with a trainer, for up to 12 staff — not a recorded module. It's discussion-based, so it works well online.
How quickly can you come?
We confirm within 48 hours, and we recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date — live online offers the best availability of dates. If you need something sooner, just ask.
