What the law says
No law requires minute taking training. But minutes are often the only record of what was decided, and they may be relied on later — in a disciplinary or grievance process, a safeguarding review, a complaint or an inspection.
Minutes that include personal information are covered by UK data protection law, and people can ask to see information held about them. Training helps staff write minutes that are accurate, neutral and fit to be shared, and gives you a record for your training file.
How we assess learning
Staff take minutes of a mock meeting and the trainer gives feedback on what they wrote. Questions and discussion throughout reinforce the learning.
Your trainer
Your trainer has used these skills for real, and uses examples from the meetings your staff actually minute — from team meetings to disciplinary and safeguarding meetings.
Logistics
- Room: horseshoe or classroom seating — what matters is clear floor space, with a projector screen or blank wall
- The trainer brings: projector, laptop, flipchart and all general training equipment
- Group size: up to 12, on-site or live online
- Timing: on-site 09:30–16:30; live online three hours, at a time agreed with you. Staff arrive 15 minutes early
- Access: the trainer needs the room 45 minutes before the start
- Anywhere in the UK, or live online
- Live online: a quiet space and a device with camera and audio for each person joining — ideally one device each, and never more than two people per device
- More dates online: live online often has more dates available, so it's worth asking if you need training sooner or have people across several locations
- Literacy: we recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between the on-site day and the online session?
The full day on-site includes more practice. The three-hour live online session covers the essentials. Both are quoted for your team.
Does it cover sensitive meetings?
Yes — safeguarding, disciplinary and complaints meetings, where accuracy, neutrality and confidentiality matter most.
Should minutes be word for word?
Usually not. Most minutes record decisions, actions and the key points of discussion. The course covers what to record, what to leave out, and when more detail is needed.
Our minutes were questioned at a hearing. Will this help?
Yes. The course covers writing clear, accurate and neutral minutes that stand up to later scrutiny.
Is it suitable outside health and care?
Yes. The skills apply to any formal meeting: team meetings, boards and committees, HR meetings and multi-agency meetings.
Can we train more than 12?
Yes. We'll run another session at the same rate.
How quickly can you come?
We'll come back with a price within 48 hours, and we recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date. If you need something sooner, just ask.
