Course specification
How it works
- Book online. One session, or two in one day, on-site or live online. We'll confirm within 48 hours. We recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date — live online offers the best availability of dates.
- Tell us what oxygen equipment you use — concentrators, cylinders, masks, nasal cannulas. Your trainer calls beforehand to confirm logistics, demonstrates on your own equipment, and brings backups just in case.
- Three hours, with a short break: the theory, then setting up and using your equipment safely.
- Certificates are emailed the next day.
What the course covers
- Anatomy and physiology of the lungs
- Understanding oxygen, and identifying the clinical need for it
- Oxygen therapy equipment
- Care and safety of medical gases
- Potential hazards, including fire risk
- General guidelines and procedures for administering oxygen
- Health and safety
- Ethical and legal responsibilities
By the end, your staff will:
- understand the appropriate uses and benefits of oxygen therapy, and the indications for it
- be able to set up the right equipment
- understand the risks and dangers, including fire
Who needs this training
Care staff who support people using oxygen:
- Residential and nursing home teams
- Supported living and home care staff
- Senior carers and team leaders who oversee oxygen use on shift
- Staff in services where someone has just been prescribed home oxygen
Staff should already have first aid training; this course builds on it. We recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy.
What the law says
Oxygen is a prescribed medicine, and it's also a serious fire hazard: in an oxygen-enriched atmosphere, materials catch fire more easily and burn more fiercely. In England, CQC's Regulation 12 (safe care and treatment) expects providers to manage medicines properly and safely and to make sure equipment is used safely, and Regulation 18 expects staff to have the training they need for their role.
Wherever you are in the UK, your fire risk assessment should take account of oxygen stored and used in the building. Staff who understand the equipment and its hazards are the first line of both.
How we assess learning
Your trainer tests understanding throughout the session through questions and discussion, with the trainer talking staff through setting up your equipment.
Your trainer
Your trainer has used these skills for real, and teaches oxygen safety in terms of your setting and the equipment your staff use every day. Tell us what you use when you book, and they'll demonstrate on it.
Logistics
- Room: seating for up to 12, horseshoe or classroom seating — what matters is clear floor space, with a projector screen or blank wall
- You provide: the oxygen equipment your team uses, for the demonstration
- The trainer brings: projector, laptop, flipchart and all general training equipment, plus backup oxygen equipment just in case
- Group size: up to 12 per session, on-site or live online
- Timing: morning 09:30–12:30 or afternoon 13:30–16:30; staff arrive 15 minutes early
- Access: the trainer needs the room 45 minutes before the start
- Anywhere in the UK, or live online
- Live online: a quiet space and a device with camera and audio for each person joining — ideally one device each, and never more than two people per device
- More dates online: live online often has more dates available, so it's worth asking if you need training sooner or have people across several locations
- Literacy: we recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy

More than 24 to train? Book another day at the same flat rate. Several sites? Book each site through our booking site at no extra cost, or we'll arrange them for a £100+VAT admin fee.
Frequently asked questions
Will staff learn to set oxygen flow rates?
They learn to use the equipment safely and to follow the prescription. Prescribing oxygen, and deciding the flow rate, stay with the prescribing clinician.
Does it cover the fire risk?
Yes. Oxygen makes things catch fire more easily and burn more fiercely, so the fire risk around oxygen in a care setting is one of the key hazards covered.
Do you use our equipment?
Yes. Tell us what you use — concentrators, cylinders, masks, nasal cannulas — and your trainer demonstrates on your own equipment. They bring backups in case anything isn't available on the day.
Do staff need first aid training first?
The course is designed for staff who already have first aid training, and builds on it. If your team needs that first, see Basic Life Support.
Can it be done online?
Yes, live with a trainer, for up to 12 staff per session. On-site is better if you can, because staff see the demonstration on your own equipment.
Can we train more than 12?
Yes. Run two sessions in one day for the same £495+VAT — up to 24 staff.
How quickly can you come?
We confirm bookings within 48 hours, and we recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date. If you need something sooner, just ask.
