- A full day, 09:30–16:30, with breaks, ending with a quiz and an action plan to take back to the workplace.
- Certificates are emailed the next day.

What the law says
In England, CQC's Regulation 12 (safe care and treatment) requires the proper and safe management of medicines, and Regulation 18 expects staff to have the training they need for their role. NICE's guideline on managing medicines in care homes (SC1) says staff should give medicines only after the necessary training and an assessment by their employer, with an annual review of their knowledge and skills. NICE's guideline NG67 covers medicines support for adults receiving social care at home, including staff training.
NICE guidance is written for England. Care regulators in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own standards for managing medicines safely.
How we assess learning
Your trainer tests understanding throughout the day through questions, discussion and MAR chart exercises, and staff complete a quiz before the end.
Your trainer
Your trainer has used these skills for real, and teaches medicines safety in terms of your setting and your own policy. Send your policy in advance and they'll work with it on the day.
Logistics
- Room: seating for up to 12, horseshoe or classroom seating — what matters is clear floor space, with a projector screen or blank wall
- The trainer brings: example MAR charts, projector, laptop, flipchart and all general training equipment
- Group size: up to 12, on-site or live online
- Timing: 09:30–16:30; staff arrive 15 minutes early
- Access: the trainer needs the room 45 minutes before the start
- Anywhere in the UK, or live online
- Live online: a quiet space and a device with camera and audio for each person joining — ideally one device each, and never more than two people per device
- More dates online: live online often has more dates available, so it's worth asking if you need training sooner or have people across several locations
- Literacy: we recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy

Frequently asked questions
Why not e-learning?
E-learning covers the theory. Here, a trainer works through MAR charts and real case studies with your staff, answers their questions about your policy, and tests learning with a quiz — that's where errors are prevented. For a full group of 12 it works out at around £41 a head.
Can staff give medicines straight after the course?
They leave fully trained and certified, ready for your usual in-house competency sign-off. NICE guidance expects staff to give medicines only once they've been trained and assessed by their employer, with their knowledge and skills reviewed every year.
Can you use our medicines policy?
Yes. Send it in advance and your trainer will work with it alongside the example MAR charts.
Can it be done online?
Yes, live with a trainer, for up to 12 staff — not a recorded module.
Does it cover insulin or buccal midazolam?
No. This course covers giving medicines safely in general. Specialist routes have their own courses, such as Buccal Midazolam and Diabetes Management & Insulin Administration.
Can we train more than 12?
Yes. Book another day at the same flat rate.
How quickly can you come?
We confirm bookings within 48 hours, and we recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date. If you need something sooner, just ask.
