How it works

  1. Enquire with your postcode, group size and preferred dates. We'll come back with a price within 48 hours. We recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date — live online offers the best availability of dates. If you need something sooner, just ask.
  2. Confirm your date, on-site or live online.
  3. Your trainer calls beforehand to confirm logistics, and to understand your service and the people you support.
  4. A full day, with breaks, built around the people your staff support.
  5. Certificates are emailed the next day.

What the course covers

  • What palliative care is, and how it differs from end of life care
  • Holistic assessment: physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs
  • Common symptoms and how care staff help: pain, breathlessness, nausea and agitation
  • Anticipatory medicines — awareness for care staff
  • Advance care planning and respecting people's wishes
  • Difficult conversations
  • Supporting families and carers
  • Recognising when someone may be dying
  • Looking after yourself

Who needs this training

Staff who support people living with a life-limiting illness, and their families:

  • Care staff and senior carers in nursing and residential homes
  • Hospice and community teams
  • Home care workers
  • Nurses who want a refresher on the wider palliative approach

We recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy.

What the law says

In England, CQC expects care to be person-centred (Regulation 9) and staff to have the training they need for their role (Regulation 18). Regulators in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland expect the same. NICE guidance on end of life care for adults, and on care of dying adults in the last days of life, describes what good care looks like — including planning ahead and involving people, and those close to them, in decisions about their care.

Training gives your staff a shared approach and gives you evidence for your training file.

How we assess learning

Learning is assessed throughout the day through case studies, discussion and questions.

Your trainer

Your trainer has used these skills for real. They handle a sensitive subject with care, and keep the day focused on the people your staff support and the conversations they find hardest.

Logistics

  • Room: horseshoe or classroom seating — what matters is clear floor space, with a screen or blank wall for slides
  • The trainer brings: all general training equipment and the course materials
  • Group size: up to 12, on-site or live online
  • Timing: a full day, 09:30–16:30 unless we agree otherwise; staff arrive 15 minutes early
  • Access: the trainer needs the room 45 minutes before the start
  • Anywhere in the UK, or live online
  • Live online: a quiet space and a device with camera and audio for each person joining — ideally one device each, and never more than two people per device
  • More dates online: live online often has more dates available, so it's worth asking if you need training sooner or have people across several locations
  • Literacy: we recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from End of Life Care?

Palliative care covers the whole course of a life-limiting illness, which can last months or years: easing symptoms, planning ahead and supporting families along the way. End of Life Care is a shorter course focused on the last months and days of life.

Is this Gold Standards Framework training?

No. It isn't Gold Standards Framework (GSF) training. If your home uses GSF, the course fits alongside it.

Does it cover syringe drivers or verifying death?

No. It covers anticipatory medicines at awareness level for care staff. Nurses who set up and monitor syringe drivers need our T34 Syringe Driver course, and staff who verify expected deaths under your policy need Verification of Expected Death.

Does it cover advance care planning?

Yes: what an advance care plan is, how staff can support someone to share their wishes, and how to use those wishes in day-to-day care.

Can it be done online?

Yes, live with a trainer for up to 12 staff — not a recorded module. On-site makes it easier for the trainer to build the day around your own service.

Will the course be upsetting for staff?

It deals with death and dying, so it can bring up feelings, especially for staff who have recently lost someone they cared for. The trainer handles it with care, and the day includes looking after yourself. Let us know beforehand if your team has had a recent death.

How quickly can you come?

We confirm within 48 hours, and we recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date. If you need something sooner, just ask.
