Compliance and certification

Staff receive a Kasorb certificate of completion for your training file. It doesn't expire, but we recommend a refresher after three years, or every year for nurses who don't verify deaths regularly. It isn't a regulated qualification. Who can verify death, and in what circumstances, is set by national guidance and your organisation's policy — the course covers both, and your own competency sign-off and authorisation decide who verifies in your service. The training counts towards staff CPD.

How it works

  1. Enquire with your postcode and team size, and where your team works — England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland. We'll come back with a price within 48 hours. We recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date. If you need something sooner, just ask.
  2. Your trainer calls beforehand to confirm logistics. Send your verification of death policy in advance and they'll work from it.
  3. Three hours: the guidance and the clinical signs, then the practical examination and the documentation.
  4. Certificates are emailed the next day.
  5. Then your own sign-off authorises each nurse to verify under your policy.

What the course covers

  • Who can verify death, and under what conditions
  • The clinical signs of death
  • How to carry out the clinical examination to confirm death: heart sounds, breath sounds and neurological signs
  • Practical on a manikin and on each other
  • The documentation during and after verification
  • Last offices, including different cultural practices
  • Care after death

Who needs this training

  • Registered nurses in nursing homes, hospices, and community and palliative care
  • Other trained staff, where your organisation's policy allows them to verify an expected death

Trained staff on shift mean families aren't left waiting for a GP or out-of-hours service after an expected death.

We recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy.

What the law says

Hospice UK's guidance, Care After Death: Registered Nurse Verification of Expected Adult Death (updated in 2025), sets out a framework for experienced registered nurses to verify an expected adult death, and many organisations base their local policy on it. Who can verify death in your service, and when, is set by your organisation's policy. In Scotland, the process and forms differ — tell us if your team is based there.

Verifying an expected death promptly and correctly matters to families and to dignity in care. A training record, followed by your own authorisation of each nurse under your policy, shows your team is ready to do it.

How we assess learning

Each person carries out the practical examination on the manikin and on each other, with feedback from the trainer, and understanding of the guidance and documentation is tested through questions and discussion.

Your trainer

Your trainer has used these skills for real, as a clinical professional. They handle the subject with care and respect — clinical, not graphic — and if you send your policy in advance, they'll teach to it.

Logistics

  • Room: horseshoe or classroom seating — what matters is space for the practical examination, and a clear wall or screen
  • The trainer brings: a manikin and the equipment for the practical
  • Group size: up to 12
  • Timing: three hours, morning 09:30–12:30 or afternoon 13:30–16:30; staff arrive 15 minutes early
  • Access: the trainer needs the room 45 minutes before the start
  • Anywhere in the UK, on-site
  • Literacy: we recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy

Cost explained

Clinical courses are priced by location: they're taught by specialist clinical trainers, and the price depends on where you are and how far your trainer needs to travel. Send us your postcode and team size and we'll confirm the price within 48 hours. It's one price for the group, up to 12 staff — not per person.

More than 12 staff? We'll quote for another session.

Frequently asked questions

Who can verify an expected death?

It depends on national guidance and your organisation's policy. In practice it's usually registered nurses who've been trained and are authorised by their employer, and some local policies extend it to other trained staff. The course covers the guidance; your policy decides how it applies.

Is this suitable for care homes without nursing?

The course is designed for registered nurses. If your service doesn't employ nurses, see what your local policy allows and talk to us about what would suit your team.

Does it cover Scotland?

Yes — tell us when you enquire. Scotland has its own process and forms for verifying death, and your trainer will cover the right one.

Does it cover last offices?

Yes, including different cultural and religious practices, and care after death.

How is this different from end of life care training?

End of life care training is about supporting someone, and their family, in the last months and days of life. This course covers what happens when an expected death occurs: verifying it, the documentation, and care after death.

Can it be done online?

No. The practical examination needs to be done in person, so it's on-site only.

How quickly can you come?

We confirm within 48 hours, and we recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date. If you need something sooner, just ask.
