It was a wow experience. The trainer taught so very well, he was patient, made sure I understood his teaching having put into consideration that I’m old and slow, couldn’t use the computer well. In fact, I enjoyed everything about the training. Kudos to the team.

How it works

  1. Enquire with your postcode, group size and preferred dates. We'll come back with a price within 48 hours. We recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date — live online offers the best availability of dates. If you need something sooner, just ask.
  2. Confirm your date, and whether you'd like the session on-site or live online.
  3. Your trainer calls beforehand to confirm logistics and understand your team and setting. Tell us whether the group is staff, managers or a mix, so the session gets the balance right.
  4. On the day: a practical, discussion-based session, with the length agreed with you when you enquire.
  5. Certificates are emailed the next day.

What the course covers

  • What stress is, and how it affects the body and mind
  • Signs of stress in yourself and others
  • Causes of work-related stress
  • HSE's Management Standards: demands, control, support, relationships, role and change
  • Practical coping techniques
  • Supporting colleagues and team members, and signposting to support
  • Building a personal plan

By the end, your staff will be able to:

  • recognise the early signs of stress in themselves and others
  • explain HSE's Management Standards and how they apply to their workplace
  • use practical techniques and a personal plan to manage pressure

Who needs this training

All staff, and managers responsible for teams:

  • Staff in any workplace who want to recognise stress early and manage it
  • Managers and team leaders who need to spot stress in their team and have supportive conversations
  • HR and health and safety leads working on stress risk assessments
  • Health and care teams working under sustained pressure

We recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy.

What the law says

Employers have a legal duty to protect employees from stress at work by assessing the risk and acting on it — under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 in Great Britain, with equivalent law in Northern Ireland. HSE's Management Standards give employers a framework for this, built around six areas of work that can cause stress if they aren't managed well: demands, control, support, relationships, role and change.

Training helps staff recognise stress early and helps managers act on it, but it doesn't replace your stress risk assessment. It's workplace training, not therapy or a mental health diagnosis, and it isn't a regulated qualification.

How we assess learning

Staff build a personal plan, and the trainer tests understanding through questions and discussion throughout the session.

Your trainer

Your trainer has used these skills for real, and keeps the session practical and supportive — focused on what staff and managers can do, and where to find help.

Logistics

  • Room: horseshoe or classroom seating — what matters is clear floor space for the group exercises
  • You provide: a room for up to 12, with a screen or blank wall for slides
  • The trainer brings: the course materials and all general training equipment
  • Group size: up to 12, face to face or live online
  • Timing: agreed with you when you enquire; staff arrive 15 minutes early
  • Access: the trainer needs the room 45 minutes before the start
  • Anywhere in the UK, or live online
  • Live online: a quiet space and a device with camera and audio for each person joining — ideally one device each, and never more than two people per device
  • More dates online: live online often has more dates available, so it's worth asking if you need training sooner or have people across several locations
  • Literacy: we recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy

Frequently asked questions

Is this therapy?

No. It's practical workplace training, with signposting to support. It doesn't diagnose or treat mental health conditions.

Does it cover HSE's Management Standards?

Yes — the six areas (demands, control, support, relationships, role and change), and how managers can use them to spot and reduce the causes of stress in their team.

Is it for staff or managers?

Both. Everyone learns to recognise stress and manage it for themselves; managers also look at supporting their team and the causes of stress at work. Tell us who's attending when you enquire.

How long is the course?

We agree the length with you when you enquire, based on who's attending and what you need.

How is this different from mental health awareness training?

Mental health awareness covers mental health and mental ill health more broadly, and how to support people. Stress awareness and management focuses on work-related stress: its signs, its causes, and practical steps for individuals and managers.

Can it be done online?

Yes, live with a trainer, for up to 12 staff. It's discussion-based, so it works well online. Each person needs a quiet space and a device with camera and audio.

How quickly can you come?

We'll come back with a price within 48 hours, and we recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date — live online offers the best availability of dates. If you need something sooner, just ask.
