How it works
- Book online, on-site or live online. We'll confirm within 48 hours. We recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date — live online offers the best availability of dates.
- Your trainer calls beforehand to confirm logistics and understand how supervision and appraisal work in your organisation. If you'd like your own supervision policy or templates used, send them at least 7 days before.
- A full day, 09:30–16:30, with breaks.
- Certificates are emailed the next day.
What the course covers
- What supervision is, and where it comes from
- Establishing the relationship: boundaries, structure and contracting

Who needs this training
Anyone who supervises staff or runs appraisals:
- New team leaders and managers
- Experienced supervisors who've never been trained
- Registered managers, deputies and senior staff in health and care services
- Managers in offices and other workplaces who run one-to-ones and appraisals
- Staff about to take on supervision responsibilities
We recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy.
What the law says
In England, CQC's Regulation 18 (staffing) requires registered providers to make sure staff receive appropriate support, training, professional development, supervision and appraisal. Inspectors look at whether supervision actually happens and whether it's meaningful — which depends on supervisors who know how to run it. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own regulators and standards.
Outside regulated care, no law requires supervision training, but regular supervision and fair appraisals are how managers support staff, spot problems early and manage performance. Training gives you evidence for your training file.
How we assess learning
The trainer reviews learning throughout the day through questions and discussion. Each person assesses themselves against the skills supervision needs, and leaves with an action plan.
Your trainer
Your trainer has used these skills for real, and runs the day around the supervision and appraisals your managers actually carry out — so the advice fits your organisation, not a generic one.
Logistics
- Room: horseshoe or classroom seating — what matters is clear floor space, with a projector screen or blank wall
- The trainer brings: projector, laptop, flipchart and all general training equipment
- Group size: up to 12, on-site or live online
- Timing: 09:30–16:30; staff arrive 15 minutes early
- Access: the trainer needs the room 45 minutes before the start
- Anywhere in the UK, or live online
- Live online: a quiet space and a device with camera and audio for each person joining — ideally one device each, and never more than two people per device
- More dates online: live online often has more dates available, so it's worth asking if you need training sooner or have people across several locations
- Literacy: we recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy

Frequently asked questions
Is it suitable for new supervisors?
Yes. It's designed for people new to supervising, and for experienced supervisors who've never been trained.
Is it only for health and care services?
No. The skills apply in any workplace where managers supervise staff or run appraisals. In health and care, the trainer uses examples from supervision in your kind of service.
What's the difference between supervision and appraisal?
Supervision is a regular, ongoing conversation about someone’s work, wellbeing and development. Appraisal is usually a yearly review of performance and objectives. The course covers both, and how they fit together.
Does it cover difficult situations in supervision?
Yes. It covers the common challenges supervisors meet and strategies to overcome them, including raising concerns about someone’s work.
Can it be done online?
Yes, live with a trainer, for up to 12 staff — not a recorded module.
How long does the certificate last?
It doesn't expire. We recommend a refresher every three years.
How quickly can you come?
We confirm bookings within 48 hours, and we recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date. If you need something sooner, just ask.
