How it works

  1. Book online. One session, or two in one day, on-site or live online. We'll confirm within 48 hours. We recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date — live online offers the best availability of dates.
  2. Your trainer calls beforehand to confirm logistics, and to understand your service and the people you support.
  3. Three hours, with a short break — discussion-based, with case studies.
  4. Certificates are emailed the next day.

What the course covers

  • Food groups and how the body uses them
  • Vitamins and minerals
  • Portion sizes
  • Types of diet
  • Hydration and the dangers of dehydration
  • Barriers to eating and drinking well
  • Choice
  • Cultural differences in diet

Who needs this training

Anyone who supports people to eat and drink:

  • Care and support workers
  • Cooks, chefs and kitchen staff
  • Senior carers, team leaders and nurses
  • Residential care, nursing homes, home care and supported living

We recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy.

What the law says

In England, CQC's Regulation 14 (meeting nutritional and hydration needs) requires providers to make sure people have enough to eat and drink to stay healthy, taking account of their preferences and any cultural or religious needs, and to support people to eat and drink where they need it. Regulation 18 expects staff to have the training they need for their role. Care regulators in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own standards, which also expect people's nutrition and hydration needs to be met.

How we assess learning

Learning is assessed throughout the session, through case studies and questions.

Your trainer

Your trainer has used these skills for real, and teaches nutrition and hydration in terms of your setting and the people you support — from mealtimes to drinks through the day.

Logistics

  • Room: horseshoe or classroom seating — what matters is clear floor space — for up to 12, with a projector screen or blank wall
  • The trainer brings: projector, laptop, flipchart and all general training equipment
  • Group size: up to 12 per session, on-site or live online
  • Timing: morning 09:30–12:30 or afternoon 13:30–16:30; staff arrive 15 minutes early
  • Access: the trainer needs the room 45 minutes before the start
  • Anywhere in the UK, or live online
  • Live online: a quiet space and a device with camera and audio for each person joining — ideally one device each, and never more than two people per device
  • More dates online: live online often has more dates available, so it's worth asking if you need training sooner or have people across several locations
  • Literacy: we recommend at least Level 1 literacy and numeracy

Cost explained

£495+VAT for the day. It's a day rate: one trainer, one day, the same price for one half-day session or two. Run two sessions, morning and afternoon, and train up to 24 staff while the rest of the team covers the floor.

More than 24 to train? Book another day at the same flat rate. Several sites? Book each site through our booking site at no extra cost, or we'll arrange them for a £100+VAT admin fee.

Frequently asked questions

Does it cover modified diets?

It covers the main types of diet. For texture-modified food and drinks for people with swallowing difficulties, ask us about our dysphagia training.

How is this different from food safety training?

Food safety training is about storing, preparing and handling food safely. Nutrition and hydration is about what people eat and drink, and supporting them to do it well.

Can it be done online?

Yes, live with a trainer, for up to 12 staff per session — not a recorded module. It's discussion-based, with case studies, so it works well online.

Why not e-learning?

E-learning can list the food groups. Here, staff work through case studies with a trainer and talk about the people they actually support at mealtimes and through the day. For a full group of 12 it works out at around £41 a head.

How long does the certificate last?

Three years.

Can we train more than 12?

Yes. Run two sessions in one day for the same £495+VAT — up to 24 staff.

How quickly can you come?

We confirm bookings within 48 hours, and we recommend booking at least four weeks in advance to secure your preferred date. If you need something sooner, just ask.
